| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | This dissertation aimed to investigate the use of metacognitive strategies involved in reading comprehension in English in a group of 50 learners, adults, Brazilians, enrolled in the subject of Instrumental Foreign Language (IFL), in the Technical Course in Mechanics, in a public school in Porto Alegre / RS. More specifically, the study sought to identify whether the students of the Technical Course in Mechanics employ metacognitive strategies in understanding a text linked to the area and, if so, which strategies are most used by the participants when reading the text among the three sub-categories of metacognitive strategies analyzed (MARSI, Mokhtari & Reichard, 2002), which are the problemsolving strategies, global strategies, and support strategies. In addition to answering a Language History Questionnaire, which collected information regarding the knowledge and use of their languages, the participants performed a task in which they were asked to translate an excerpt of a technical manual in the area of Industrial Mechanics, specifically metal mechanics. The basis for the study was based on research in related areas such as Piaget's Genetic Epistemology, which deals with learning and the study of knowledge in the human being, Cognitive Psychology, linking metacognition and learning, Psycholinguistics, connecting with executive functions, and Linguistics, which works on language acquisition issues. The analysis of the data generated indicated that the vast majority of students are moderate users of metacognitive strategies, responding to the first objective of this study. The results observed, for which metacognitive strategies were the most used by the research participants, were that support, and problem-solving strategies were the most used, followed by a median use of global strategies. | en |
