Instrução e circulação da palavra escrita : o caso do jornal O Exemplo (Porto Alegre, RS, 1892-1930)

Abstract

Esta tese de doutorado examina o caso do jornal O Exemplo, um hebdomadário impresso em Porto Alegre, estado do Rio Grande do Sul, com ressonâncias em outros estados do Brasil, que circulou entre 1892-1930. O recorte temporal toma como referência as 720 edições de O Exemplo, as quais apresentam interrupções de publicação realizadas pelo próprio semanário, mas também edições não examinadas devido à impossibilidade de localização. Parte dos pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos da História Cultural e da história da cultura escrita e apresenta-se como contribuição à História da Educação. A análise investigou O Exemplo em três aspectos: os textos, o suporte e as práticas de leitura. Esse tripé, sob inspiração de Roger Chartier, inspirou a elaboração do problema da investigação, expresso na pergunta central: Como a instrução, o conhecimento e a leitura são apresentados e se imprimem nos textos publicados nas edições de O Exemplo com vistas a formar e instruir seus leitores, em especial homens de cor e pessoas das classes desprotegidas, no decorrer de sua trajetória (1892-1930)? A partir da questão formulada, a tese analisa os diferentes formatos editoriais que o jornal O Exemplo assumiu, em diferentes tempos, e que, possivelmente, jogaram com a atribuição de sentidos pelos leitores, desde sua criação até o fim de sua circulação. Examina também a materialidade do documento, além de sua periodicidade, circulação, distribuição e tiragem, bem como o uso de fotografias, ilustrações, anúncios, enfim, uma diversidade de intervenções editoriais. A tese mostra, ainda, as redes de sociabilidades firmadas entre diferentes leitores, estabelecidas a partir de visitas à redação desse impresso, bem como de permutas entre diferentes impressos e instituições. Com base nas evidências apresentadas nos textos, no suporte e nas práticas, pode-se concluir que a editoria e seus colaboradores atuaram em defesa do povo, principalmente dos homens de cor, em aspectos diversos, seja no que se refere ao preconceito de cor, seja na disseminação da bandeira da necessidade da instrução, tematizada em todas as edições publicadas de O Exemplo.

This doctoral thesis examines the case of the newspaper O Exemplo, a weekly newspaper printed in Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, with resonances in other states of Brazil, which circulated between 1892-1930. The time frame takes as its reference the 720 editions of O Exemplo, which present publication interruptions made by the weekly itself, but also editions not examined due to the impossibility of localization. It starts from the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Cultural History and the history of written culture, and is presented as a contribution to the History of Education. The analysis investigated O Exemplo in three aspects: the texts, the support and the reading practices. This tripod, inspired by Roger Chartier, stimulated the elaboration of the research problem, expressed in the central question: How instruction, knowledge, and reading are presented and imprinted in the texts published in the editions of O Exemplo with a view to educating and instructing their readers, especially men of color and people of the unprotected classes, throughout its tragetory (1892- 1930)? From the question formulated, the thesis analyzes the different editorial formats that the newspaper O Exemplo assumed, in different times, and that, possibly, played with the attribution of meanings by the readers, from its creation until the end of its circulation. It also examines the materiality of the document, as well as its periodicity, circulation, distribution and print run, as well as the use of photographs, illustrations, advertisements, in short, a variety of editorial interventions. The thesis also shows the sociability networks steadied between different readers, established through visits to the writing of this print, as well as barters between different prints and institutions. Based on the evidence presented in the texts, the support and the practices, it can be concluded that the editorial and its collaborators acted in defense of the people, especially of the men of color, in different aspects, whether regarding the prejudice of color, whether in the dissemination of the flag of the need for instruction, thematic in all published editions of O Exemplo.
