"Jogando pela esquerda" : o futebol brasileiro nas páginas dos jornais opinião e movimento (1975-1978)

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe entender de que modo o futebol foi apresentado e interpretado pelos jornais alternativos Opinião (1972-1977) e Movimento (1975-1981) entre os anos 1975 e 1978. Por ser um dos elementos definidores da identidade nacional brasileira, com grande capacidade de mobilização popular, o futebol apresenta-se como alvo de disputas políticas e culturais. Tendo em vista o contexto histórico da ditadura empresarial-militar, pretende-se compreender como setores da esquerda se posicionaram e interpretaram os significados do esporte mais popular do país num cenário de transformações tanto para a sociedade brasileira, com o início do processo de abertura política, quanto para o futebol brasileiro, com a eliminação da Copa do Mundo de 1974, questionamentos sobre o “estilo brasileiro” de se jogar futebol, além da influência institucional e ideológica do governo ditatorial. Para tanto, nos apoiamos nas contribuições teóricas dos autores Antonio Gramsci e Pierre Bourdieu, especialmente no papel da imprensa na sociedade moderna, e Benedict Anderson, Eric Hobsbawm e Marilena Chauí sobre a relevância da nação e da identidade nacional enquanto fenômeno histórico. A escolha dos referidos jornais como fonte e objeto de estudo se deu pelo fato dos mesmos integrarem parte da imprensa alternativa do período, que procurou colocar-se contra o governo ditatorial, questionando seu projeto de poder.

This work proposes to understand how football was presented and interpreted by both the alternative newspapers Opinião (1972-1977) and Movimento (1975-1981) among the years 1975 and 1978. Being one of the defining elements of Brazilian national identity, with huge capacity for popular mobilization, football presents as a target of political and cultural disputes. Taking into account the historical context of the military-enterprise dictatorship, it is intended to understand how left sectors have positioned themselves and interpreted the meanings of the most popular sport in the country in a scenario of transformations both for Brazilian society, with the beginning of the process of political opening, as well as for Brazilian football, with the elimination in the 1974 World Cup, questions about the "Brazilian style" of playing football, as well as the institutional and ideological influence of the dictatorial government. For this purpose, we rely on the theoretical contributions of authors Antonio Gramsci and Pierre Bourdieu, especially on the role of the press in modern society, and Benedict Anderson, Eric Hobsbawm and Marilena Chauí on the relevance of the nation and national identity as a historical phenomenon. The choice of these newspapers as a source and as object of study was due to the fact that they were part of the alternative press of the period, which sought to put itself up against the dictatorial government, questioning its power project.
