A biblioteca de Sérgio : representação do irrepresentável

Abstract

A tese aqui apresentada trata da obra O Ateneu de Raul Pompéia. Contextualizou-se a época em que o autor viveu e as circunstâncias em que o livro foi escrito. Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica com trabalhos de autores que analisaram a obra, especialmente Schwarz e Bosi. A obra foi analisada sob a perspectiva testemunhal. Procedeu-se a um levantamento de dados sobre as ilustrações e os espaços de educação e cultura na época da escritura da obra, bem como dos livros que mais comumente circulavam entre os leitores do fim do século XIX. Estudos sobre representações sociais na literatura foram abordados tendo em vista dar sustentação teórica à análise dos procedimentos de citação em O Ateneu. Por fim foi realizado um levantamento sobre todas as referências literárias, menção a livros como suportes de informação e à biblioteca presentes na obra, seguido da análise das representações acerca de livros e leituras do personagem/narrador Sérgio. Concluiu-se que houve uma evolução intelectual nas leituras do personagem a partir do momento que começou a frequentar a biblioteca do colégio. No que diz respeito ao procedimento de citação, a conclusão é de que as leituras da infância, do personagem, são descritas e comentadas possibilitando identificar facilmente a forma como ele percebia tais livros, já os textos citados pelo narrador servem de subsídio para representar o irrepresentável, quando ele não consegue expressar algo com o vocabulário corrente ele utiliza uma referência literária para tal.

The thesis presented here is based on the novel O Ateneu by Raul Pompéia. Elements of the era in which the author lived and the circumstances under which the book was written are contextualized. A bibliographic reference was carried out with work by authors who analyzed this novel, in particular Schwarz and Bosi. The novel was analyzed from the perspective of a testimonial. Data was collected about illustrations, education settings and culture at the time the novel was written in addition to books that were most commonly in circulation amongst readers at the end of the 19th Century. Studies about social representations in literature were addressed with the view to providing theoretical support to the analysis of the procedure for citation in O Ateneu. Finally, all literary references and books mentioned as sources of information and the bibliography present in the novel itself were studied followed by an analysis of the books and readings of the character and narrator, Sergio. It was concluded that there was an intellectual evolution of the readings of the character from the moment he began to frequent the school library. From what is said with respect to the procedure for citation, the conclusion is that the readings of the main character from his childhood are described and commented on thus enabling the identification and form in which he perceived such books. Texts cited by the narrator serve to represent the irrepresentable. When he is unable to express himself using correct vocabulary, he uses a literary reference for the aforementioned.
