This thesis investigates the representations of the people in the records produced by the clerks of the Parlement of Paris, Nicolas de Baye and Clément de Fauquembergue, between 1400 and 1418, in a context marked by the civil war between Armagnacs and Burgundians and by the political crises of the reign of Charles VI. The research is based on the analysis of parliamentary documents produced within the royal administration, understood as official writings shaped by the subjectivity of their authors and by the political disputes of the period. The main objective is to understand how the people were discursively mobilized in these records and which roles were assigned to them in narratives concerning violence, disorder, and the legitimacy of power. To this end, a systematic survey was conducted of occurrences of terms related to the semantic field of “people”. The analysis demonstrated that references to the people recurrently appear associated with the unfolding of the civil war, especially in episodes of urban instability and political contestation. This thesis argues that the clerks employed the term “people” as a discursive strategy to shift responsibility for violence and the disruption of order from the nobles involved in the conflict onto the Parisian population. At the same time, the records reveal the active participation of the inhabitants of Paris in the political life of the city and in the struggles for power that marked the early fifteenth century in France. ...
