In recent decades, the cement industry has expanded the use of alternative fuels and high-sulfur petroleum coke to reduce costs and environmental impacts. However, these substitutions increase the alkali and impurity content in the clinker, directly affecting cement hydration and performance. The combustion of sulfur-rich fuels promotes the formation of alkali sulfates, such as arcanite and aphthitalite, which influence key properties like setting time and mechanical strength. Additionally, the presence of alkalis modifies the crystal structure of tricalcium aluminate (C3A), promoting a transition from the cubic to the orthorhombic form. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the different C3A polymorphs (cubic and orthorhombic) and the presence of alkali sulfates — arcanite (K2SO4) and aphthitalite ((K,Na)2SO4) — on the optimization of calcium sulfate content, hydration, and compressive strength of Portland cement. Two industrial clinkers with similar compositions but distinct C3A polymorphs were used, and alkali sulfates were synthesized and added in varying proportions. The experimental methodology was divided into four stages: (i) determination of the optimal SO₃ content through isothermal calorimetry; (ii) evaluation of compressive strength at 1 and 28 days; (iii) hydration analysis via thermogravimetry (TG/DTG); and (iv) identification of hydrated phases by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the clinker with cubic C3A exhibited higher early-age reactivity, whereas the orthorhombic clinker performed better at 28 days. The addition of alkali sulfates intensified early hydration reactions and increased the calcium sulfate demand, with aphthitalite promoting the greatest heat release and early strength gain. In formulations containing the orthorhombic clinker, transient formation of syngenite was observed — a phase that may act as a precursor to ettringite and influence the setting time. It is concluded that both the C3A polymorphism and the type of alkali sulfate are key factors in optimizing calcium sulfate content and the final performance of cement. ...
