This dissertation analyzes the migrant struggles of the Venezuelan population in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, seeking to identify, analyze, and understand the practices, narratives, emotions, and strategies that shape their experiences, while questioning what this entanglement of elements reveals about the difficulties faced by the group. The study initially aimed to investigate Venezuelan LGBTQIA+ migrants, whose presence proved almost absent both in official data and in collective spaces of struggle. Although the research transformed in response to these troubling absences, it nonetheless engages with and calls attention to them, tensioned and felt from the author’s own social locus as a trans, lesbian, white, Brazilian woman. The research was conducted through ethnography between June and October 2025 with the Migrants and Refugees United Association and its leaderships, following registration task forces aimed at building a migrant census—a tool for claiming public policies and community-based assistance. Grounded in theoretical frameworks addressing processes of subjection and subjectivation, migrant struggles, acts of citizenship, and care as a non-innocent political practice, the dissertation argues that such engagements cannot be reduced to reactive responses to precarity, but rather constitute a discursive field in which vulnerability and autonomy coexist. By highlighting how ordinary actions of care, organization, and claim-making produce situated forms of social participation, new forms of citizenship and being a citizen, the study contributes to challenging normative readings of the category “migrant” and to expanding the anthropological debate on migration, citizenship, and social justice, particularly through arenas of discussion such as cosmopolitics. ...
