The safe use of organic residues in agriculture is limited by the insufficient understanding of organic matter transformations and the relationship between the composition of humic substances and their quality. This study aimed to evaluate the humification process of residues from the pulp and paper industry (biological sludge in trench, LBV, and eucalyptus bark compost, CCE) over time, as well as the degree of humification of products derived from agro-industrial residues (PCO and COA) and leonardite (LEO). Humification was monitored by quantifying humic substances (HS) and by their characterization through elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). LBV presented a low initial C/N ratio (13) and reached the highest humification indices after four months, which then decreased up to twelve months. In contrast, the composting of CCE was accompanied by a gradual decrease in the C/N ratio (from 83 to 50) and an increase in humification indices over 21 months. The COA and LEO residues showed the highest humification indices, expressed by the high HS content (between 2 and 24%). The chemical– molecular characterization of LBV and CCE by FTIR revealed a reduction in carbohydrate-like structures and an increase in carboxylic groups over time, reflecting the degradation of more labile structures and the increase in functionalization. TGA indicated an increase in the structural complexity of the materials throughout the residue treatment period. In general, fulvic acids exhibited a greater aromatic character than humic acids. LBV showed less evidence of structural change over time compared to CCE, for which convergent results among the techniques revealed more pronounced structural transformations. The combined use of classical and modern techniques demonstrated that traditional indices have limitations in assessing the maturation of some residues, whereas spectroscopic and thermal methods proved to be more sensitive to the structural transformations of humic substances. ...
