Perspectivismo e realismo na filosofia da ciência

Abstract

O debate, já clássico, entre ‘realistas’ e ‘antirrealistas’ em Filosofia da Ciência continua a render uma vasta gama de produção filosófica. Uma das contribuições mais recentes e desafiadoras para este debate é apresentada por Michela Massimi sob o nome de Perspectival Realism (perspectivismo realista ou realismo perspectivista). Essa tese busca investigar como a ciência, com todo seu aparato técnico, histórico e culturalmente situado, têm sido capaz de produzir alegações de conhecimento de forma confiável. Massimi prioriza responder a questões epistêmicas relacionadas à prática científica, relegando parcialmente a ontologia — isto é, a questão do que existe — aos cientistas. Contudo, a fim de preservar o teor realista da sua tese perspectivista (ou o teor perspectivista da sua tese realista), a autora busca maneiras de conciliar uma série de concepções historicamente tensionadas na história da filosofia; a relação entre verdade objetiva e verdade perspectivista, entre unidade e pluralidade de representações científicas, entre uma estrutura metafísica e suas manifestações, e finalmente, entre a realidade e as perspectivas humanas sobre ela. Debates estes que seguem sendo os motores mais potentes de investigação filosófica.

The classic debate between ‘realists’ and ‘anti-realists’ in the Philosophy of Science continues to yield a vast range of philosophical work. One of the most recent and challenging contributions to this debate is presented by Michela Massimi under the name of Perspectival Realism. This thesis seeks to investigate how science, with all its technical, historical, and culturally situated apparatus, has been able to reliably produce knowledge claims. Massimi prioritizes answering epistemic questions related to scientific practice, partly relegating ontology—that is, the question of what exists—to scientists. However, in order to preserve the realist content of her perspectivist thesis (or the perspectivist content of her realist thesis), the author seeks ways to reconcile a series of long-standing tensions in philosophy: the relationship between objective truth and perspectival truth, between unity and plurality of scientific representations, between a metaphysical structure and its manifestations, and finally, between reality and human perspectives on it. These debates continue to be the most potent engines of philosophical inquiry.
