Neoptólemo, natureza humana e a formação do cidadão : a representação da φύσις [phýsis] na tragédia Filoctetes de Sófocles

Abstract

A presente tese é intitulada NEOPTÓLEMO, NATUREZA HUMANA E A FORMAÇÃO DO CIDADÃO: a representação da φύσις [phýsis] na tragédia Filoctetes de Sófocles é um esforço de investigação que realizo sobre a representação da φύσις em uma específica tragédia grega, o Filoctetes de Sófocles. Não se trata de uma história da palavra φύσις [phýsis]. O que pretendi nesse percurso foi relacionar a representação da φύσις [phýsis] – compreendida como natureza humana – no drama trágico Filoctetes (encenado em Atenas no ano de 409 AEC) com seu contexto de produção. Não apenas seu contexto mais imediato: o final do século V AEC e suas crises sociais, políticas e culturais. Mas, também, propor uma leitura do Filoctetes que faça-o converter-se em um documento-fonte histórico que ilumine como o tema da natureza humana servira ao poeta trágico – Sófocles, no caso – em efetivar a função paidêutica, tanto do poeta, e da tragédia grega mesma. Assim, a φύσις [phýsis], mais do que afirmar ser o verdadeiro tema ou problema da tragédia Filoctetes – afirmação que seria de complexa comprovação – é o pressuposto e a possibilidade de adentrar o tema da formação dos cidadãos no mundo democrático grego e suas práticas sociais e culturais.

This thesis is entitled: NEOPTOLEMOS, HUMAN NATURE AND THE CITZEN’S FORMATION: the representation of φύσις [phýsis] in the tragedy Sophocles’ Philoctetes, is an investigation effort that I carry out on the representation of φύσις [phýsis] in a specific Greek tragedy, Sophocles’ Philoctetes. This is not a history of the word φύσις [phýsis]. What I intended on this journey was to relate the representation of φύσις [phýsis] – understood as human nature – in the tragic drama Philoctetes (performed in Athens in 409 BCE) with its production context. Not just its more immediate context: the end of the 5th century BCE and its social, political, and cultural crises. But, also, to propose a reading of Philoctetes that makes it become a historical source document that illuminates how the theme of human nature served the tragic poet – Sophocles, in this case – in realizing the paideutic function, both poet and Greek tragedy itself. Thus, φύσις [phýsis], more than claiming to be the true theme or problem of the Philoctetes tragedy – a statement that would be complex to prove – is the assumption and the possibility of entering the theme of the formation of citizens in the Greek democratic world and its social and cultural practices.
