Desestabilizando gêneros : a construção fluida da identidade de gênero por mulheres da família Paston no século XV (Inglaterra)

Abstract

Essa tese tem por objetivo discutir as elaborações discursivas em torno do gênero na Inglaterra do século XV entre a família Paston. A análise pretende compreender como gênero, enquanto um campo de disputas de significados e elemento performático, foi elaborado e instrumentalizado por mulheres da gentry inglesa. O objetivo é questionar a ideia de binarismo rígido para gênero no medievo. Para isso, analisamos cartas trocadas entre a família Paston, destacando-se aquelas produzidas por Agnes Paston e Margaret Paston, em relação a diversos temas como uso das categorias “homem/mulher”, noções de maternidade/paternidade e as dinâmicas de propriedade e de negociação. A tese traz como defesa a construção de um espectro fluido e múltiplo de gênero que respondia às necessidades da gentry no século XV e das mulheres Paston mais especificamente. Dessa forma, pontuamos que a noção binária ou rigidamente fronteiriça de gênero não havia sido hegemônica no contexto estudado.

This thesis aims to discuss gender and its discursive elaborations in 15th century England among the Paston family. The analysis seeks to understand how gender, as a field of contested meanings and as a performative element, was developed and utilized by women of the English gentry. Our main goal is to question the idea of a rigid gender binarism in the medieval period. In order to achieve this, we have examined the letters exchanged among the Paston family, particularly those produced by Agnes Paston and Margaret Paston, regarding multiple topics such as the use of the categories 'man/woman,' notions of motherhood/fatherhood, and the dynamics of property and negotiation. The thesis argues for the construction of a fluid and plural spectrum of gender that responded to the needs of the 15th century gentry and, more specifically, the Paston women. Thus, we emphasize that the binary or rigidly bounded notion of gender had not been hegemonic in that period.
