Contribuições ao conhecimento sobre os Chondrichthyes Permianos da Bacia do Paraná no Brasil

Abstract

Os Chondrichthyes correspondem aos peixes cartilaginosos, representados atualmente pelos tubarões, raias e quimeras. A origem hipotética deste grupo remonta ao Ordoviciano, entretanto, o elasmobrânquio mais antigo é conhecido somente para o início do Siluriano (Llandovery), sendo este representado por escamas isoladas, enquanto que o primeiro registro de dentes isolados só é registrado cerca de 20 milhões de anos depois, no inicio do Devoniano. No Permiano da Bacia do Paraná no Brasil, os Chondrichthyes são representados pelos Xenacanthiformes, Symmoriiformes, Ctenacanthiformes, Hybodontiformes, Sphenacanthidae, Orodontiformes, Eugeneodontiformes e Petalodontiformes, com onze espécies formalmente descritas para este período, até o momento. Esse volume apresenta uma revisão dos Chondrichthyes permianos brasileiros da Bacia do Paraná em sua primeira parte, bem como, três artigos na segunda parte, incluindo a descrição de duas espécies novas e novas ocorrências deste clado. Ainda assim, essa diversidade é relativamente baixa ao comparar com a diversidade de outros grupos de vertebrados, invertebrados e plantas de mesma idade encontrados na Bacia do Paraná, bem como ao comparar com a diversidade de Chondrichthyes conhecidos para o mesmo período em locais do mundo onde o grupo é mais estudado (e.g. Alemanha, E.U.A.,Grã-Bretanha). Isso indica que ainda há muito a ser descoberto sobre os Chondrichthyes nas unidades litoestratigráficas brasileiras.

The Chondrichthyes are represented by the cartilaginous fishes, which are currently represented by sharks, rays and rabbitfishes. The hypothetical origin of this group dates back to the Ordovician, however, the oldest elasmobranch is known only to the beginning of the Silurian (Llandovery), and this are represented by isolated scales, while the oldest elasmobranch teeth is recorded only 20 million years later, at the Early Devonian. In the Permian of the Paraná Basin in Brazil, the Chondrichthyes are represented by the Xenacanthiformes, Symmoriiformes, Ctenacanthiformes, Hybodontiformes, Sphenacanthidae, Orodontiformes, Eugeneodontiformes e Petalodontiformes, with by twelve formally described taxa during this period at the moment. A revision of the Brazilian Permian Chondrichthyes found in the Paraná Basin is presented in the first part of this volume, as well as three articles in the second part, including the description of two new species and some new occurrences of this clade are presented. Even so, this diversity is relatively low when comparing with the other vertebrate, invertebrate and plant diversity of the same age found in the Paraná Basin, as well as comparing it with the Chondrichthes diversity known from the same period from another places of the world where this clade is better studied (e.g. Germany, U.S.A. and Great Britain). This indicates that there is still much to be discovered about the Chondrichthyes in the Brazilian lithostratigraphic units
