In this study the origin and evolution of the Rio Grande do Sul northern coast (sector between Torres and Curumim) was defined as a basal transgressive unit (retrogradational) followed by a regressive (progradational) one. The transition between these units (transgressive/regressive) occurred before the higher level of the Post-Glacial Marine Transgression was reached, resulting in a phase of normal regression followed by a forced regression during the process of barrier progradation. Standard Penetrating Test (SPT), vibrocore borehole and Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR) profiles integrated the acquisition data of the sedimentary record. Sedimentological, paleontological and geochronological analyses were the base of the description and interpretation of sedimentary facies and their association. The basal record of the Holocene corresponds to a pre-transgression continental and coastal environments (basal swamps) associated to the flooding of the antecedent topography (Pleistocene substrate), as a consequence of the rising of both the water table and sea-level. Gradually the sea-level proportioned the flooding of these environments initiating the transgressive barrier phase, when lagoonal/estuarine environments occupied the rear of the barriers, in the vicinity of lagoonal inlets. At this time, flood tidal deltas occupied the distal positions of these inlets, while the transgressive barrier morphology corresponded to washover morphology, which migrated towards mainland carrying sediment from the beach to the backbarrier. Thus, while in the continental side of the barrier washover processes were depositing beach sands over lagoonal/estuarine sediments, in the oceanic side of the barrier these deposits were eroded by waves and longshore currents, during the process of migration of the ravinement surface towards the mainland. The latest events of washover deposition dated on 7.2 ka, occurred coupled with the closure of inlets, indicating the end of the transgressive phase. After this isolation of the backbarrier, the littoral sediments that were transported across the coastline by the connecting channels and washover processes acquired a longitudinal component transport of hundreds of kilometers, and thus effectively starting the phase of regression of the barrier at around 7.2 ka. With the sea-level even still rising, this initial stage of barrier progradation corresponded to a normal regression. This phase lasted until the higher sea level of the Post-Glacial Marine Transgression (6-5 ka) was reached and then was succeeded by a phase of forced regression up to the current day.en
