The Itapeva Lake, whose surface area is about 125 km2, is located in the northern region of the Coastal Plain in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The highland of the Serra Geral plateau is drained by the basin of the Três Forquilhas and Cardoso rivers and formed by volcanic and sedimentary rocks which get annual average rainfall of 1300 mm. The climate parameters, the mineralogical composition and the relief provide favorable conditions to the weathering and erosion of rocks; thus, large volumes of sediments are transported to the lacustrine body. The parameters that determine the depositional conditions in the Itapeva Lake are mainly controlled by the energy level of the currents and waves caused by the wind. These conditions were studied after the collection of bottom samples – with a Van Veen sampler along E-W transversal profiles georeferenced by GPS – and their analysis in a sedimentology laboratory. Results led to the texture mapping with the percentage of granulometric distribution of the bottom sediments and the organic matter found in the Itapeva Lake. The Pejrup’s diagram was then applied to associate the granulometric distribution with the hydrodynamics. As a result, four sectors, whose sand percentage ranged from 90 to 100, 50 to 90, 10 to 50 and 0 to 10, were identified. It was interpreted as an indicator of the energy in the depositional environment. Results also provided knowledge about the sedimentation process in the Itapeva Lake and the identification of areas where there is more intense sedimentary dynamics. The sedimentation rate was estimated by collecting three shallow cores and applying the 210Pb geochronology method. Values showed sedimentation rates in the order of 2.9 mm.a-1, 2.4 mm.a-1 and 3.2 mm.a-1 in the N-S direction. The contribution of the drainage of the Três Forquilhas river was mainly responsible for the difference among these sectors since it increased the sedimentation rate near its mouth.en
