Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)
Abstract
During the Austral summer of 2004/2005, several shallow cores were recovered by a Chilean-Brazilian traverse from the Geographic South Pole to the Parodi Chilean Station (80°18'S, 81°23'W). This dissertation discusses ion chromatography results of one of these cores, IC3 (85°59'S, 81°35'W), which was melted into discrete samples at 2-3 cm resolution using the Climate Change Institute, CCI, University of Maine (USA), continuous melting system and analyzed using a Dionex DX-500 Ion Chromatograph. ...
The minimum and maximum ionic concentrations in the upper 25 m of the core are 1.84 , 253.17 μg L-1 (Cl-); 12.16 , 201.17 μg L-1 (NO3-); 7.60 , 190.46 μg L-1 (SO42-); 2.15 , 50.31 μg L-1 (MS-, methanesulfonate, CH3SO3-); 1.34 , 147.22 μg L-1 (Na+); 0.28 , 10.41 μg L-1 (K+); 0.52 , 16.42 μg L-1 (Mg2+) , 0.66 , 29.60 μg L-1 (Ca2+), which are in agreement with values reported in the literature for the area. Cl- variability exhibits a similar pattern to Na+, and the plotted Cl-/Na+ ratio, is higher than the seawater ratio of 1.8, suggesting an additional source of Cl- from HCl. As expected for central Antarctica, the MS- record showed no seasonality, and the same behavior was also presented by NO3- ion. The core was estimated to represent 48±3 years of accumulation (a 32.3 cm year-1 in water equivalent). ...
