Com quem dialoga Émile Benveniste? Um estudo de suas interlocuções e de sua inscrição na linguística

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe-se a estudar as interlocuções do linguista Émile Benveniste e averiguar como o autor se inscreve na linguística a partir de seus diálogos. Dessa maneira, postulamos três perguntas norteadoras que guiam cada um dos capítulos do trabalho: a) Com quem dialoga Émile Benveniste e como se dão tais diálogos?; b) Quais são os efeitos dessas interlocuções para a construção da perspectiva de linguagem de Benveniste? e c) Como Benveniste se situa em seu campo de estudos, a partir dessas interlocuções?. Para responder à primeira questão, no primeiro capítulo, estabelecemos a “Primeira Parte” dos dois volumes dos Problemas de Linguística Geral (Benveniste, 1991; 1989), junto ao “Prefácio” ao primeiro volume, como corpus de pesquisa e, a partir de nossa leitura, elencamos os autores com quem Benveniste dialoga, assim como o que é discutido entre eles. No segundo capítulo do trabalho, a fim de responder à segunda questão norteadora, investigamos efeitos das interlocuções; desenvolvemos um fio condutor de temáticas como efeito dos debates, assim como averiguamos efeitos nas perspectivas de leitores do autor; e, finalizando o capítulo, chegamos a uma linguística geral que dialoga com outras áreas. No terceiro capítulo, para responder à terceira pergunta proposta, estudamos o que é a linguística para e de Benveniste, considerando nosso corpus, e atingimos sua linguística antropológica, com a ajuda da fortuna crítica do autor. Em conclusão, o estudo mostra que Benveniste se inscreve na linguística através de sua linguística antropológica, a qual é resultado de suas interlocuções com linguistas e com autores de outras áreas das ciências humanas.

The present research aims to study the interlocutions of the linguist Émile Benveniste and to examine how he positions himself within linguistics through these dialogues. To this end, three guiding research questions structure the study and correspond to each of its chapters: a) With whom does Émile Benveniste engage in dialogue, and how do these dialogues take place? b) What are the effects of these interlocutions on the construction of Benveniste’s perspective on language? and c) How does Benveniste situate himself within his field of study through these interlocutions? To address the first question, the first chapter establishes as its research corpus the “Primeira Parte” of both volumes of Problemas de Linguística Geral (Benveniste, 1991; 1989), together with the “Prefácio” to the first volume. Based on our reading of these texts, we identify the authors with whom Benveniste engages in dialogue and examine the issues discussed in these exchanges. To answer the second guiding question, the second chapter investigates the effects of these interlocutions. It traces a thread of themes emerging from these debates, examines their impact on the perspectives of Benveniste’s readers, and concludes by demonstrating the emergence of a general linguistics that engages in dialogue with other fields of knowledge. The third chapter answers the third research question by examining what linguistics is according to Benveniste and the manner in which his linguistics is constructed, considering the selected corpus. Drawing on the author's critical reception, the analysis ultimately reaches what may be characterized as his anthropological linguistics. In conclusion, this study shows that Benveniste positions himself within linguistics through his anthropological linguistics, which emerges from his interlocutions with linguists as well as with scholars from other fields within the humanities.
