Abstract
This study presents a literature review on the relationship between language mindsets and feedback practices in additional language (AL) teaching. The research aims to analyze how students’ and teachers’ language mindsets are related to the seeking, preferences, provision, and interpretation of corrections in the learning process. To this end, twelve peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2025 and selected from the CAPES journal portal were analyzed. The sample consisted of quantitat ...
The sample consisted of quantitative or mixed-methods studies, with only quantitative data being considered. The results were organized into four categories: feedback-seeking behavior, preferences for types of corrective feedback, teacher mindset and students’ meta-perceptions, and the impact of specific types of feedback. The analysis indicated that students with a stronger orientation toward a growth mindset tend to attribute greater learning value to feedback, whereas students with more fixed beliefs may perceive higher social and self-presentation costs in correction. Students’ preferences were also found to be related to the meanings they attribute to errors and to feedback modalities. Regarding teachers, the studies suggest an association between their mindsets and the repertoire of reported practices, as well as indicating that teacher messages may communicate expectations about students’ potential for development. It is concluded that feedback does not constitute neutral information, since its effects depend on interpretation processes shaped by beliefs, goals, social relationships, and message characteristics. Thus, more productive feedback practices tend to combine linguistic accuracy, strategic guidance, encouragement of self-regulation, and affective support, communicating concrete possibilities for students’ development. ...
