This study investigates the 4K digital restoration of the film A Hora da Estrela (1985), directed by Suzana Amaral and adapted from the 1977 novel of the same name by Clarice Lispector. Based on the understanding of cinema as cultural heritage and a device of memory, the research reflects on the networks of audiovisual preservation and restoration that enabled the work’s recirculation in 2024 and its renewed encounter with contemporary audiences. The study discusses how digital restoration extends beyond a strictly technical dimension, becoming a practice of updating cinematic memory and reactivating the historical, aesthetic, and cultural meanings of the film. By following the trajectory connecting Clarice Lispector, Suzana Amaral, Marcélia Cartaxo, and the character Macabéa, the research seeks to understand how these women traverse different temporalities and contribute to the permanence of A Hora da Estrela within Brazilian cultural imagination, especially through the restoration coordinated by a woman, Débora Butruce. The theoretical framework engages with audiovisual preservation, memory, and heritage studies, and employs Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory as a methodological approach to map the relationships among individuals, institutions, technologies, and agents involved in sustaining the film’s continued circulation. The study concludes that digitization and 4K restoration not only ensure the material survival of the film but also foster new forms of access, interpretation, and recognition of its relevance to Brazilian film history, as well as the ongoing construction of networks that sustain its presence for new generations. ...
