Abstract
This Undergraduate thesis presents a comparative and qualitative case study on narrativity, ergodics, and the flexi-narrative structure in the electronic games Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) and Resident Evil: Village (2021). This Undergraduate thesis presents a comparative and qualitative case study on narrativity, ergodics, and the flexi-narrative structure in the electronic games Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) and Resident Evil: Village (2021). Taking into account the growing market and the need to expand the area of Game Studies in the Brazilian academic context — given its the multidisciplinary nature —, this research investigates how the two objects constitute an articulated duology within the transmedia franchise Resident Evil (1996-present), in the form of a flexi-narrative. To this end, the study analyzes the mechanical organization of cybertext and the concept of ergodic processing developed by Espen Aarseth (1997), with the concepts of fabula, sujet, narrative, narrativity, and the dynamic system of gaps, all of which are anchored in the perspective of Functionalist Narratology and the writings of Meir Sternberg (1978; 2006). Furthermore, the studies of flexi-narrative developed by Robin Nelson (1997) and the analyses of Colin Burnett (2024) assist in the mapping of episodic and self-sufficient narrative structures, which nevertheless fill expository gaps in a macrostructure, originating a serialized narrative — studies that, although dealing with media products such as soap operas and movie sagas, can also be applied to the context of electronic games through association with the concepts of cybertext and ergodics. To verify these concepts, a case study was carried out with the two objects, in addition to a comparative analysis, which sought to constitute the transmedia storyworld of the franchise, establishing its mythos, topos, and ethos, according to the studies of Klastrup and Tosca (2004) and Marie-Laure Ryan (2019), in addition to organizing the transtextual relations of the objects of study with other media internal and external to the franchise, making use of Thomas Leitch's (2007) adaptation-allusion gradient. Regarding the specifics of narrative and ergodic relations, it was necessary to revisit Jakobson’s (1978) Dominant, expanding his discussions through Aarseth's (2012) ontic model between the narrative-ludic axes and the ergodic-narrative gradient proposed by Lopes (2023), when evaluating the importance of certain elements of the ergodic narratives in question, besides reworking Gérard Genette's (1971) concept of paratext. The research results demonstrate the validity of the hypothesis, since both narrative-games operate in a self-contained manner, while also revitalizing the franchise and allowing integration into the macro-sujet of the serialized narrative, through influenceable narrative satellites, both by player actions and by the peritextual nature of certain items that populate the ludic space. Beyond that, the mapping of the transtextual relations results in a mosaic of pastiches, colonizations, revisions and allusions (cf. Leitch, 2007) to media products external and internal to the franchise. Finally, despite the introduction of choices that have consequences in the narrative cores of the seventh game, generating multiple sujets, the need for integration into a serialized narrative imposes a dominance over ergodics, favoring one narrative core to the detriment of the other to determine the continuity of the franchise through a direct sequel and subduing the ergodic impact. ...
