Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, stemming predominantly from the combustion of fossil fuels for power generation, constitute one of the greatest global climate challenges. In light of this, the use of biomass emerges as one of the most viable industrial alternatives for transitioning toward a cleaner energy matrix. The partial substitution of fossil fuels with biomass in existing industrial assets presents significant technical potential and economic viability. The present study evaluates the feasibility of co-firing biomass and mineral coal in an industrial-scale multi-fuel boiler (coal, oil, and gas), originally designed for pulverized coal. The focus is to implement this energy transition with the fewest possible physical modifications to the system, thereby ensuring operational efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions. The research was divided into progressive stages, beginning with the physicochemical characterization of five feedstocks: eucalyptus sawdust, eucalyptus chips, pine chips, sugarcane bagasse pellets, and rice husk. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to rank the most promising materials based on their grindability, ash content, nitrogen, and SiO2 levels. The selected biomasses (eucalyptus sawdust and sugarcane bagasse) were subjected to pilot combustion tests in a Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) to evaluate mixtures and particle sizes. Finally, a continuous 72-hour industrial-scale test was conducted using eucalyptus sawdust in mass fractions of 1%, 5%, and 7% as a substitute for coal. The application of the AHP method and the DTF tests demonstrated that eucalyptus sawdust with a particle size below 500 µm exhibits a combustion profile most compatible with that of pure coal. During the industrial-scale tests, the mixtures flowed adequately through the pre-existing logistics and milling systems. Combustion remained stable, maintaining all process and steam quality variables within control limits. Environmentally, co-firing with 7% biomass reduced parameters such as opacity and sulfur oxide emissions compared to the combustion of pure coal. The co-firing of eucalyptus sawdust with mineral coal proved to be a technically viable and environmentally favorable solution for the studied system, requiring minimal infrastructural modifications. It is estimated that the continuous adoption of the 7% biomass mixture could enable an annual reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 emissions at the industrial facility. ...
