Abstract
This dissertation investigates the connections between obscenity, censorship, and the obscene in the recent Brazilian context, based on two episodes that occurred between 2019 and 2020 affecting the artists David Ceccon (Porto Alegre, 1992) and Órion Lalli (Campinas, 1994). Starting from the reflection that these three terms operate as a conceptual tripod capable of illuminating the contemporary mechanisms of visibility management in the field of art, especially when dissident bodies and narratives related to non-normative genders and sexualities are framed as intolerable, the control devices that regulate who can appear, speak, and remain on stage are highlighted. The theoretical framework is based on the understanding of the obscene as that which must remain "offstage," according to the etymology mobilized by Nuno César Abreu, understanding obscenity as the transgressive gesture of making visible what has been forbidden. This research also engages with the distinctions between erotic, pornographic, and obscene proposed by Afonso Medeiros, challenging their normative limits, and with Judith Butler's formulations on performativity and hate speech, especially regarding the materiality of language and its effects on bodies. The reflections of Jota Mombaça and Paul B. Preciado are mobilized to consider survival, displacement, and exile as political dimensions that permeate artistic practice after the experience of censorship. Methodologically, the study articulates a critical bibliographic review, documentary analysis (including institutional records, news reports, legal documents, and reports on artistic freedom), and an interpretative analysis of the works and trajectories of Ceccon and Lalli. Both the formal aspects of the productions and their contexts of circulation, reception, and interruption are considered, understanding censorship as a process that affects private life, geographical displacement, and strategies for insertion into the national and international artistic system. By examining the transformations in the poetics, daily lives, and forms of institutional articulation of artists after the restrictions suffered, this dissertation argues that censorship produces lasting effects of caution, self-restraint, and reconfiguration of artistic practice. Finally, it proposes a reflection on the very act of researching censorship and obscenity, understanding it as potentially "obscene" in the sense used here: bringing to the center of the debate that which, historically, has been kept behind the curtains, reinscribing in the public space the conflicts that traverse it. ...
