The study of Mylodontinae from Pleistocene localities of the central (Municipalities of São Gabriel and Rosário do Sul), western (Municipalities Quaraí, Uruguaiana and Alegrete) and coast regions (Municipality of Santa Vitória do Palmar) of Rio Grande do Sul State enabled the identification of the cranial and mandibular material as Glossotherium robustum, on the basis of following characters: enlargement of the anterior portion of maxilla, rounded and ventrolaterally bent fossa for the estilohial, elliptical shape of the occipital condyle and shovel-shaped symphyseal region. Cranial characters, mostly rostral region, provide a better support for a identification at the species level. Dentaries, teeth and isolated postcranial material (humerus, radius, femur, tibia and astragalus) were identified as Glossotherium aff. G. robustum. For the dentaries, it was taken into account the spatulate shape of the symphyseal region and the convexity of the ventral margin of dentary body. Small differences in morphology (e.g. size of the teeth, height of the dentary body) were seen as a result of ontogeny. In the identification of postcranial material, some characters were used as: robustness of the humeral ridge, well developed edge of astragalar facet in the tibia and the right angle of the odontoid apophysis in the astragalus. In addition, we took into account the morphological uniformity of the postcranial bones in regard to the skull and the lack of complete skeletons for the comparative. Some specimens were identificated only as Mylodontinae; because of the lack of diagnostic characters, and the fragmentary state of material. According to the characters mentioned above, it was confirmed a greater morphological similarity of the pleistocenic material of RS with that of Pampean fauna (upper Pleistocene) of Argentina and Uruguay. Comparative study also allowed to recognize consistent morphological differences regarding to the intertropical form, which must seen regarded as entirely distinct from the southern taxon. Thus, to date, the records of G. robustum indicated that this taxon was well distributed between latitudes 17°S and 40°S including Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.en
