Riordanverse : a comprehensive look into the construction of an expanded storyworld

Abstract

O presente trabalho visa explorar o conceito de universo expandido proposto por Gomes & Indrusiak (2021) a partir do universo literário referido pelos seus leitores como o “Riordanverse”, composto pelas séries de livros chamadas Percy Jackson e os Olimpianos (2005-2009; 2023-), Heróis do Olimpo (2010-2014), As Crônicas de Kane (2010-2012), Magnus Chase e os Deuses de Asgard (2015-2017), e As Provações de Apolo (2016-2020). O objeto escolhido foi criado e desenvolvido pelo autor Rick Riordan e reimagina as mitologias clássicas grega, romana, nórdica e egípcia a partir das cinco séries de livros interconectadas mencionadas, que também foram expandidas através de contos e livros guia intradiegéticos. O arquivo deste universo também abrange as adaptações dos dois primeiros livros de Percy Jackson e os Olimpianos em filme, a adaptação em série de TV desenvolvida pela Disney+, as adaptações em forma de graphic novel e o musical desenvolvido para o teatro. O principal objetivo desta pesquisa é descrever como é realizada a construção deste universo, observando as conexões entre os componentes do seu arquivo e como os consumidores podem utilizar a hipótese do universo expandido para integrá-los a apenas um storyworld, ou mundo ficcional. Também pretende-se diferenciar o conceito do universo expandido da narração transmídia proposta por Jenkins (2006), a partir da análise realizada utilizando as adaptações da história para investigar como elas são integradas ao universo. Para tal fim, a pesquisa interage, além dos conceitos já citados, com o conceito de storyworld e adaptação transmídia desenvolvido por Marie-Laure Ryan (2014), para servir de base para a análise do Riordanverse como um tipo de mundo; com a narratologia funcionalista de Sternberg (1981), para observar a construção narratológica da história; com a noção de arquivo e literatura arcôntica desenvolvidos por Derecho (2006), para observar a integração das adaptações realizadas a partir das séries de livros; e com os elementos principais de um storyworld: o mythos, o ethos e o topos, desenvolvidos por Klastrup e Tosca (2004), para observar os elementos que podem ser utilizados pelos leitores para reconhecer o storyworld através das suas diversas representações. Ao explorar como diferentes textos interagem dentro do Riordanverse, foi observado que a integração das partes ao mesmo universo se dá a partir do reconhecimento dos elementos principais do storyworld e da contribuição de cada componente para a construção de um só mundo onde todos eles acontecem. Além disso, foi explicada a diferença entre os conceitos de universo expandido e narração transmídia no caso do Riordanverse, explicando quais partes dos conceitos se aplicam a ele e quais não se aplicam, a partir da utilização da noção de arquivo para a entender a relação entre as adaptações com o storyworld – a única fonte de narração em mídias diferentes do texto escrito.

The present work aims to explore the concept of expanded storyworld proposed by Gomes & Indrusiak (2021) from the literary universe referred to by its readers as the “Riordanverse”, composed of the series of books called Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2005-2009; 2023-), The Heroes of Olympus (2010-2014), The Kane Chronicles (2010-2012), Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (2010-2012), 2015-2017), and The Trials of Apollo (2016-2020). The chosen object was created and developed by author Rick Riordan and reimagines classical Greek, Roman, Norse and Egyptian mythologies from the aforementioned five interconnected book series, which have also been expanded through short stories and intradiegetic guide books. The archive of this universe also covers the adaptations of the first two Percy Jackson and the Olympians books on film, the TV series adaptation developed by Disney+, the adaptations in the form of graphic novels and the musical developed for the theater. The main objective of this research is to describe how the construction of this universe is carried out, observing the connections between the components of its file and how readers can use the expanded universe hypothesis to integrate them into only one storyworld. It is also intended to differentiate the concept of the expanded storyworld from the transmedia storytelling proposed by Jenkins (2006), through the analysis carried out using the adaptations of the story to investigate how they are integrated into the universe. To this end, the research interacts, in addition to the concepts already mentioned, with the concept of storyworld and transmedia storyworld developed by Marie-Laure Ryan (2014), to serve as a basis for the analysis of the Riordanverse as a type of world; with Sternberg's functionalist narratology (1981), to observe the narratological construction of history; with the notion of archival and archontic literature developed by Derecho (2006), to observe the integration of the adaptations carried out from the book series; and with the core elements of a storyworld: the mythos, the ethos and the topos, developed by Klastrup and Tosca (2004), to observe the elements that can be used by readers to recognize the storyworld through its various representations. When exploring how different texts interact within the Riordanverse, it was observed that the integration of the parts to the same universe occurs from the recognition of the main elements of the storyworld and the contribution of each component to the construction of a single world where they all take place. In addition, the difference between the concepts of expanded universe and transmedia narration in the case of Riordanverse was explained, explaining which parts of the concepts apply to it and which do not apply, from the use of the notion of archive to understand the relationship between adaptations–the only source of narration in media other than the written text–and the storyworld.
