Where the monstrous feminine goes : subversion of the monstrous feminine in a song of ice and fire

Abstract

This dissertation addresses the various forms through which the characters Cersei and Brienne from A Song of Ice and Fire are Othered and the role of abjection alongside the applicability of the concept of the monstrous feminine in regards to them. The research carried out here analyzes different aspects of the characters that prove a challenge to previous understandings of the monstrous feminine and how it appears in women's gender performance. As so, it brings light to abjection and monsterization as an act forced upon women rather than existing on its own, although it might pose an important tool to free oneself from the chains of oppressive patriarchal devices when inverted or used as a means to threat such structures from the inside. The methodology consists in a comparative analysis of the characters in relation as well to gender or monster studies concepts applied to them; the approach is qualitative. The investigation concludes that the monstrous feminine is rooted in the perception of others over the monster rather than in inherent traits or specific acts alone and that Cersei and Brienne's interactions with violence are rather a critique to the whole of patriarchal oppressive structures instead of being limited to hegemonic masculine violence. This dissertation suggests that future research takes the structural oppression in the novels as a base to investigate the different forms through which characters and humans navigate systematic oppression as individuals – singular in their ability to make a change. In conclusion, this work might be important to future studies researching the cultural Othering of women, impacting the current social view of womanhood and of the interaction of gender and the monstrous, highlighting their structural effects and permitting them to be better addressed.

Este trabalho aborda as diversas formas através das quais as personagens Cersei e Brienne de As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo são alterizadas e o papel da abjeção em relação à aplicabilidade do conceito de feminino monstruoso no que lhes diz respeito. A investigação aqui desenvolvida analisa diferentes aspectos das personagens que desafiam os entendimentos anteriores sobre o feminino monstruoso e a forma como este se manifesta na performance de gênero das mulheres. Traz à luz, assim, a abjeção e a monstrualização como um ato imposto às mulheres e não como algo que existe por si só, embora possa constituir uma importante ferramenta para promover o desprendimento de dispositivos patriarcais opressivos logo que é invertido ou brandido como ameaça às estruturas a partir do interior das mesmas. A metodologia aplicada consiste em uma análise comparativa das personagens entre si e em face aos conceitos provindos dos estudos de gênero ou da monstruosidade a elas aplicados; a abordagem é qualitativa. A investigação conclui que o feminino monstruoso se localiza na percepção de outrem sobre o monstro mais do que em traços inerentes ou atos específicos, e que as interações de Cersei e Brienne com a violência são antes uma crítica ao conjunto das estruturas patriarcais opressivas em vez de limitarem a uma crítica à violência masculina hegemônica. Este trabalho sugere que a investigação futura tome a opressão estrutural nos livros analisados como base para investigar as diferentes formas através das quais as personagens e os humanos em si navegam a opressão sistemática como indivíduos – isto é, singularmente capazes de fazer a diferença. Em suma, este trabalho pode se mostrar importante para futuros estudos que investiguem a alteridade a que as mulheres são submetidas culturalmente, impactando a atual visão social sobre feminilidade e sobre a interação entre gênero e o monstruoso, assim como evidenciando os efeitos estruturais destes e permitindo uma melhor abordagem dos mesmos.
