"Cidade acaba como o sertão. Acaba?" : narrativas de um fim de mundo, lugar-sertão no Piauí

Abstract

Parto da pergunta lançada por Riobaldo em Grande Sertão: Veredas, romance de João Guimarães Rosa, menos como profecia e mais como dispositivo para pensar linhas de argumentação nos múltiplos sentidos que o verbo acabar sugere. Pergunto: a cidade acaba, no sentido de limitar, findar, terminar, quando o sertão começa? Acaba, ao dar acabamento, dar forma, moldar, o sertão? Ou a cidade acaba, ao eliminar, anular, com o mundo do sertão? Considero que o fim da cidade e o fim do sertão não são coisas distintas, mas o lugar onde duas condições diferentes se encontram, se tensionam e configuram uma borda. Desde o centro, a cidade, enquanto ideia totalizante dos modos de ser e estar no mundo, configura um cerco para o sertão ao propagar seus signos de modernidade e progresso, sob a promessa do desenvolvimento. Desde os fins de mundo, lugares considerados vazios, longínquos, atrasados, fora da lei (Moura, 2020), o sertão ora é romantizado, ora é estigmatizado pelas narrativas colonialistas que o vinculam ao atraso e, portanto, a um mundo que precisa ser vencido na maior velocidade possível. Refletindo sobre a perpetuação da imagem do vazio e do atraso, pergunto: de que modo a “ideia de cidade” e os processos de urbanização hegemônica colonizam e interditam os modos de vida de um lugar-sertão? E como, no contraponto, o sertão absorve, recusa ou resiste à produção hegemônica do espaço e aos modos de existência impostos pela modernidade-colonialidade? Para ancorar essas questões, a pesquisa tem como chão o território configurado pelos pequenos municípios de Jacobina do Piauí e Conceição do Canindé, no sertão do semiárido piauiense, e parte do evento de implantação da barragem da Pedra Redonda, no alto curso do rio Canindé – um tecelão de memórias e relações desse lugar-sertão. Assumo a narrativa como abordagem teórico-metodológica e artefato político no trabalho (Mizoguchi, 2015) porque ela possibilita que se revelem as interdições, contradições, recusas e resistências no jogo de tensionamento entre cidade e sertão. A cartografia, enquanto estratégia de pesquisa, seguiu no rastro das histórias em torno do rio e da barragem, e das experiências e práticas que re-existem contra o apagamento dos modos de vida no sertão, revelando de que maneira ele se reinventa enquanto lugar, nas fronteiras da resistência e da imaginação. Ao cartografar um lugar-sertão em sua diversidade de práticas e temporalidades, o trabalho amplia os modos de conhecer e contar esses mundos outros, comumente à margem do campo dos estudos urbanos, escapando às narrativas oficiais acerca dos sertões e suas gentes.

I start with the question posed by Riobaldo in Grande Sertão: Veredas, a novel by João Guimarães Rosa, less as a prophecy and more as a device for thinking about lines of argumentation in the multiple meanings suggested by the verb “to end.” I ask: does the city end, in the sense of limiting, finishing, terminating, when the sertão begins? Does it end by finishing, shaping, molding the sertão? Or does the city end by eliminating, nullifying the world of the sertão? I consider that the end of the city and the end of the sertão are not distinct things, but the place where two different conditions meet, tense each other, and form a border. From the center, the city, as a totalizing idea of ways of being and existing in the world, forms a siege around the sertão by propagating its signs of modernity and progress, under the promise of development. From the ends of the world, places considered empty, distant, backward, outside the law (Moura, 2020), the sertão is sometimes romanticized, sometimes stigmatized by colonialist narratives that link it to backwardness and, therefore, to a world that needs to be conquered as quickly as possible. Reflecting on the perpetuation of the image of emptiness and backwardness, I ask: how do the “idea of the city” and the processes of hegemonic urbanization colonize and interdict the ways of life of a lugar-sertão? And how, in contrast, does the sertão absorb, reject, or resist the hegemonic production of space and the modes of existence imposed by modernity-coloniality? To anchor these questions, the research is based on the territory comprised of the small municipalities of Jacobina do Piauí and Conceição do Canindé, in the semi-arid sertão of Piauí, and part of the Pedra Redonda dam construction event, on the upper reaches of the Canindé River - a weaver of memories and relationships of this lugar-sertão. I use narrative as a theoretical-methodological approach and political artifact in my work (Mizoguchi, 2015) because it allows for the revelation of prohibitions, contradictions, refusals and resistance in the game of tension between the city and the sertão. The cartography, as a research strategy, followed the trail of the stories surrounding the river and the dam, and the experiences and practices that re-exist against the erasure of ways of life in the sertão, revealing how it reinvents itself, as a place, on the frontiers of resistance and imagination. By mapping a lugar sertão in its diversity of practices and temporalities, the work expands the ways of knowing and telling these other worlds, commonly on the margins of the field of urban studies, escaping the official narratives about the sertões and their people.
