Discourses on the feminine in historia regum britanniae : myth, history and gender in twelfth-century prose

Abstract

The present research proposes a study of the medieval chronicle traditionally known as Historia Regum Britanniae [The History of the Kings of Britain], written in early twelfth-century England by the Welsh cleric Geoffrey of Monmouth. In his chronicle, Monmouth narrates in Latin prose to a Norman audience a mythic-historical past elaborated from earlier ecclesiastical chronicles and the incorporation of ancient myths from oral tradition. Although the longestablished title of the work only contemplates the deeds of men from that past, it is possible to perceive the importance that women – and their relationships with men – carry in the mythical narratives present throughout the chronicle. Considering that Monmouth reworks ancient tales under a Christian veil, the ways the relationships between the feminine and the masculine are portrayed in the chronicle are expected to meet the social expectations of a medieval Christian society. Therefore, the present monograph proposes a study of how gender relations are portrayed in the mythical narratives of Historia Regum Britanniae, in order to verify whether these narratives reproduce the medieval hegemonic discourse on the feminine and on gender relations and to what extent they deviate from that. To achieve that, we reconstruct the context in which the Historia Regum Britanniae was written, focusing on the political, social, and cultural aspects of the Anglo-Norman Period. The main theoretical framework is based on the concepts of gender, power, and discourse, as well as their intersection with medieval studies. These elements are mainly examined through the studies of Scott (1986), Foucault (1971), Bloch (1991) and Bennet (1993). At the end of the study, it was observed that Historia Regum Britanniae creates a political imagery that reflects the ambiguities and complexities of medieval understandings of gender relations and the limits and possibilities for female agency.

A presente pesquisa propõe um estudo da crônica medieval tradicionalmente conhecida como Historia Regum Britanniae [História dos Reis da Bretanha], escrita na Inglaterra do início do século XII pelo clérigo galês Geoffrey de Monmouth. Em sua crônica, Monmouth narra, em prosa latina para um público normando, um passado mítico-histórico elaborado a partir de crônicas eclesiásticas anteriores e da incorporação de mitos da tradição oral. Embora o título consagrado da obra contemple apenas os feitos dos homens desse passado, é possível perceber a importância que as mulheres – e suas relações com os homens – carregam nas narrativas míticas presentes ao longo da crônica. Considerando que Monmouth reelabora mitos antigos sob um véu cristão, espera-se que as formas como as relações entre o feminino e o masculino são retratadas na crônica atendam às expectativas sociais da sociedade cristã medieval. A presente monografia propõe um estudo de como as relações de gênero são retratadas nas narrativas míticas de Historia Regum Britanniae, a fim de verificar se essas narrativas reproduzem o discurso hegemônico medieval sobre o feminino e sobre as relações de gênero, e em que medida se desviam dele. Para tanto, reconstruímos o contexto em que Historia Regum Britanniae foi escrita, com foco nos aspectos políticos, sociais e culturais do Período Anglo- Normando. O referencial teórico principal baseia-se nos conceitos de gênero, poder e discurso, e suas interseções com os estudos medievais. Esses elementos são examinados principalmente por meio dos estudos de Scott (1986), Foucault (1971), Bloch (1991) e Bennet (1993). Ao final do estudo, observou-se que Historia Regum Britanniae cria um imaginário político que reflete as ambiguidades e complexidades de como as relações de gênero eram percebidas no medievo e os limites e possibilidades da agência feminina.
