O espaço do leitor na imprensa brasileira : análise semiótica das cartas dos leitores

Abstract

Esta pesquisa descreve as cartas do leitor publicadas pela imprensa jornalística brasileira à luz da teoria semiótica desenvolvida por A J. Greimas e pelo Grupo de Investigações Sêmio-lingüísticas da Escola de Altos Estudos em Ciências Sociais, concentrando-se na análise de sua organização narrativa. Estabelecida a opção teórica e o plano de análise, procedeu-se a investigação do modo de articulação do espaço do leitor, e também das intervenções que sofre, a fim de propor uma definição desse universo discursivo e de contribuir para a compreensão de sua importância na imprensa. Da articulação dos esquemas narrativos da carta do leitor propriamente dita e da carta-resposta, bem como da presença dos percursos da sanção e da manipulação, obteve-se a definição das cartas como discursos de ajuizamento, de cobrança e de denúncia do cidadão em relação às atuações insatisfatórias do governo, da iniciativa privada e também do jornal, com os quais mantém relações contratuais mesmo que implícitas. Os ajuizamentos e as cobranças presentes nas cartas revelam, em primeiro plano, um cidadão dotado de parâmetros de julgamento, disposto a reivindicar seus direitos e a participar das discussões sobre a condução do pais. Já a denúncia do cidadão representa ainda sua força de pressão, à medida que expõe os sujeitos do fazer à ameaça da desmoralização pública. Desse modo, à imagem do leitor como um contribuinte penalizado e um consumidor lesado e desconsiderado em função das más atuações do governo, da iniciativa privada e do jornal, contrapõe-se o revide do cidadão sob a forma da desmoralização possível dos sujeitos faltosos. Nesse sentido, a carta-resposta dos órgãos públicos ou privados às denúncias são discursos de reparação e de reversão da imagem negativa e, ao mesmo tempo, revelam o poder de pressão da carta do leitor e a importância atribuida ao cidadão. Já as notas de redação são uma das estratégias acionadas pelo jornal para reafirmar sua imagem junto ao público de sujeito comprometido com a verdade dos fatos e aliado do cidadão, do mesmo modo que apontam para as intervenções sofridas pelo espaço do leitor na imprensa. Assim, à luz da organização narrativa mas indo além da mesma, a análise procurou avançar na compreensão do "atravessamento" operado pelo jornal nesse espaço. A presença das configurações do pleito e do debate, assumidas pela seção do leitor nos jornais brasileiros, associa-se it identificação de que o jornal desempenha um papel de mediador com uma dupla dimensão: a de agente conciliador entre partes em conflito e a de agente que incentiva o debate de idéias. O modo como cada jornal opera tais configurações é responsável pelos característicos efeitos de representação das linhas editoriais. Desse modo, ao ceder um espaço de manifestação e de pressão acis indivíduos, o jornal dá aos leitores concretude, buscando legitimar sua própria atuação como agente benevolente a serviço dos cidadãos e também como agente critico em defesa da verdade.

The present research describes the letters to the editor published in Brazilian newspapers in the light of the semiotic theory developed by A.J.Greimas and by the Semio-linguistic Investigation Group of the School of High Studies in Social Sciences, concentrates on the analysis of their narrative organization. Once the theoretical option and the analysis plan were established, the readers space articulation mode as well as the interventions suffered by it, started being investigated in order to propose a definition for this universe of discourse and to contribute to the comprehension of its importance to the newspaper press. From the articulation of the narrative schema of the letter to the editor itself and of the reply letter, as well as from the presence of the sanction and manipulation paths, the letters were defined as judgement, demand and denunciation discourses of the citizen in relation to the unsatisfactory actions from the public authorities, from private enterprise and also from the newspaper, with which he keeps contracts however implicit they may be. The judgements and demands present in the letters reveal , in the first place, a citizen that possesses judgement criteria, who is willing to claim his rights and to take part in the discussions about his country's destiny. On the other hand, the citizen's denunciation also reveals his power of pressure, while he exposes the subjects of action to the threat of public demoralization. Thus, to the image of the reader as a punished taxpayer and a consumer who is disrespected in his rights as a result of bad governamental , private enterprise or newspaper action, the citizen's retaliation comes up as a way of possible demoralization of the blameworthy subjects. In this sense, the reply letters from the public or private organs to what has been denounced, are discourses of repair and reversal of their negative image and, at the same time, unveil the power of pressure exerted by the reader's letter and the importance assigned to the citizen. On the other hand, the notes from the editorial staff are one of the strategies used by the newspaper to re-assure before the public its image of a subject engaged with the truth of facts and a citizen's ally , at the same time that they point to the interventions suffered by the reader's space in the press. Thus, in the light of the narrative organization, but going beyond the same, the analysis has tried to make progress towards understanding the intervention caused by the newspaper in that space. The presence of the configurations of claim and debate assumed by the letters to the editor section in Brazilian newspapers, can be associated to the recognition that the newspaper performs a role of mediator in a double dimension : as a conciliatory agent between the conflicting parts and as an agent that incentivates the debate of ideas. The way through which each newspaper operates such configurations is responsible for the characteristic effects of representation of editorial lines. This way, when allowing for a space of opinion and pressure by the individuals, a newspaper provides the reader with concreteness , aiming at legitimizing its own acting as a benevolent agent at the service of the citizens and also as a critic agent in defense of the truth.
