A translation of Nostalgia has ruined my life, through Katharina Reiss and Christiane Nord

Abstract

This monograph presents a description of the translation process to Brazilian Portuguese of the novella Nostalgia Has Ruined My Life, written by New Zealand author Zarah Butcher-McGunnigle and published in 2021. The narrative and writing style embodied in the novella include many striking characteristics that must be adjusted to the target culture of the translation. Considering these factors, and my interest in Functionalist theories, the translation was made through the approaches of Katharina Reiss (with special focus on the book Translation Criticism) and Christiane Nord (with special focus on the book Translating as a Purposeful Activity). The first chapter of the monograph focuses on contextualizing the novella and it also includes a report of the two exclusive interviews I did with the author. Reiss's and Nord's approaches to Functionalism are also presented in this part. The second chapter presents my translation. Due to the limited length of a monograph, the corpus consists of the first 10 pages of the book – amounting to about 15% of the text. These pages were divided into excerpts, that are presented with discussions on which choices had to be made so the text would fit the target culture, and how and where Reiss's and Nord's approaches were helpful. This monograph aims to serve as an example of how Functionalist theories can support the translator during the translation process of a literary text, and to bring Butcher-McGunnigle's writing to Brazilian Portuguese in a translation that fits the target culture and daily vernacular among people in their 20s, all while keeping the essence of the source text writing style.

Este trabalho de conclusão de curso apresenta uma descrição do processo de tradução para o português brasileiro da novela Nostalgia Has Ruined My Life, escrita pela autora neozelandesa Zarah Butcher-McGunnigle e publicada em 2021. A narrativa e o estilo de escrita presentes na obra incluem diversas características marcantes que precisam ser ajustadas à cultura de chegada da tradução. Considerando esses fatores, e meu interesse pelas teorias funcionalistas, a tradução foi realizada com base nas abordagens de Katharina Reiss (com foco especial no livro Translation Criticism) e Christiane Nord (com foco especial no livro Translating as a Purposeful Activity). O primeiro capítulo deste trabalho se dedica a contextualizar a novela e inclui também o relato de duas entrevistas exclusivas que realizei com a autora. As abordagens de Reiss e Nord sobre o Funcionalismo também são apresentadas nesta primeira parte. O segundo capítulo apresenta minha tradução. Devido às limitações referentes à extensão de um trabalho de conclusão de curso, o corpus é composto pelas primeiras 10 páginas do livro — o que corresponde a cerca de 15% do texto. Essas páginas foram divididas em trechos, que são apresentados com discussões sobre quais escolhas precisaram ser feitas para que o texto se adequasse à cultura de chegada, e como e onde as abordagens de Reiss e Nord foram úteis. Este trabalho tem como objetivo servir de exemplo de como as teorias funcionalistas podem apoiar o tradutor durante o processo de tradução de um texto literário, além de trazer a escrita de Butcher-McGunnigle para o português brasileiro em uma tradução que se alinha à cultura de chegada e ao linguajar cotidiano de pessoas na faixa dos 20 anos, mantendo, ao mesmo tempo, a essência do estilo de escrita do texto de origem.
