O sujeito maconheiro e a cultura da cannabis : uma história da maconha no século XX através dos arquivos da Revista High Times (1974-2014)

Abstract

A tese tem como objetivo investigar a história da Cannabis nos Estados Unidos no final do século XX e no início do século XXI, entre 1974 e 2021. Por isso, a pesquisa analisa o arquivo da revista estadunidense High Times, fundada em 1974 por Thomas King Forcade em Nova Iorque, como um produto tardio da contracultura dos anos 1960 e como uma pioneira nas informações sobre a Cannabis. A hipótese de pesquisa é que a repressão política gerada pelo processo de transformação da maconha em droga ilícita no início do século XX criou mecanismos sociais que impulsionaram o surgimento de uma cultura complexa da Cannabis que apresenta e entrelaça as relações da planta com a medicina, o direito, a economia e a estética. Diante da tensão entre repressão e resistência na história da maconha, emerge o sujeito maconheiro, o corpo que se relaciona com a cultura da planta através de uma luta política pela sua legalização. Dessa forma, a tese apresenta como os movimentos de legalização nos Estados Unidos, registrados e protagonizados pela High Times, foram estabelecendo práticas culturais de resistência que lograram a reversão das leis proibicionistas em um processo que se expande globalmente.

The thesis investigates the history of Cannabis in the United States during the end of the twentieth-century and the beginning of the twentieth-first, between 1974 and 2014. To complete this goal, the research analyzes the archives of the American magazine High Times, which was created in 1974 by Thomas King Forcade in New York, as a later counterculture offspring and as a Cannabis knowledge pioneer. The hypothesis is that the political repression bred by the process of transforming Cannabis into an illicit drug created social mechanisms which fostered the occurrence of a complex Cannabis culture which presents and entangles the plant relations towards medicine, law, economy and aesthetics. In the face of this dynamic between repression and resistance in the history of Cannabis, the pothead subject emerges, the body which relates itself with the marijuana culture through the political battle to legalize it. Therefore, the thesis shows how the movements to legalize Cannabis, registered and featured by High Times magazine, have crafted cultural practices of resistance which achieved the end of prohibitionist laws in a process which expands itself globally.
