The alchemy of shadow and desire in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Abstract

Frankenstein, one of the most renowned literary works of the 19th century, is a profound exploration of dark themes and complex, often controversial characters. Not only was Frankenstein a groundbreaking work for its portrayal of scientific ambition and human nature, but it also represented a significant contribution to women’s writing in history. Moreover, the novel's ability to engage with forbidden themes and its nuanced examination of human behavior and morality have sparked extensive dialogue about the essence of humanity. Over the years, Frankenstein has been the subject of numerous analyses, and it has been embraced by various literary genres, including gothic horror, science fiction, romance, and literature written by women. Even after two centuries, Shelley's work continues to captivate and resonate deeply with audiences. This thesis seeks to analyze Frankenstein through the lens of Analytical Psychology, specifically using Jungian theory. The primary focus of this study is a character analysis of Victor Frankenstein. The goal of this study is to explore and understand why Victor Frankenstein remains inactive throughout the novel concerning his creature. The aim is to explore and discuss the motivations behind his actions and his interactions with the creature he creates. To achieve this, the thesis will apply Jung's concepts of the Collective Unconscious and Archetypes, with particular emphasis on the shadow Archetype. The character study will be framed by a hypothesis that posits the novel's narrative trajectory in two distinct phases. The first phase suggests that, before the awakening of the creature, Victor Frankenstein is profoundly influenced by his shadow, which, according to Jung's theory, dominates his unconscious mind and guides his actions in ways he is not fully aware of. The second phase posits that, upon the creature’s awakening, Frankenstein's reaction to his shadow is one of repression and denial, which exacerbates the consequences of his actions and leads to further psychological and moral crises. Key moments in the novel will be highlighted to illustrate how Frankenstein’s internal conflict, particularly his struggle with his shadow, shapes the unfolding of the narrative. This thesis will ultimately explore the central question: How can the Collective Unconscious and the Shadow Archetype theory provide deeper insight into Victor Frankenstein's emotional and psychological stagnation throughout the novel?

Frankenstein não foi apenas uma obra inovadora por sua representação da ambição científica e da natureza humana, mas também representou uma contribuição significativa para a escrita feminina na história. Além disso, a capacidade do romance de se envolver com temas proibidos e sua profunda análise do comportamento humano e da moralidade desencadearam um extenso diálogo sobre a essência da humanidade. Ao longo dos anos, Frankenstein foi objeto de inúmeras análises e foi adotado por vários gêneros literários, incluindo o horror gótico, a ficção científica, o romance e literatura de autoria feminina. Mesmo depois de dois séculos, a obra de Shelley continua a cativar e ressoar profundamente com o público. Esta dissertação busca analisar Frankenstein através das lentes da psicanálise, especificamente usando a teoria junguiana. O foco principal deste estudo é uma análise do personagem Victor Frankenstein, com vistas a explorar e entender a inação de Victor Frankenstein com relação a sua criatura, o que fica evidente em suas ações e interações com sua cria. Para tal, serão de valia os conceitos de Inconsciente Coletivo e Arquétipos, com ênfase no Arquétipo da Sombra. O estudo do personagem será enquadrado por uma hipótese que postula a trajetória narrativa do romance em duas fases distintas. A primeira fase sugere que, antes do despertar da criatura, Victor Frankenstein é profundamente influenciado por sua Sombra, que, de acordo com a teoria de Jung, domina sua mente inconsciente e guia suas ações de maneiras das quais ele não está totalmente ciente. A segunda fase postula que, após o despertar da criatura, a reação de Frankenstein à sua Sombra é de repressão e negação, o que exacerba as consequências de suas ações e leva a novas crises psicológicas e morais. Momentos-chave no romance serão destacados para ilustrar como o conflito interno de Frankenstein (particularmente sua luta com sua Sombra) molda o desenrolar da narrativa. Assim, a questão central foca em como a teoria do Inconsciente Coletivo e do Arquétipo da Sombra podem contribuir para uma visão mais profunda da estagnação emocional e psicológica de Victor Frankenstein ao longo do romance.
