O humor na tradução e legendagem do gênero de comédia : uma análise do seriado Friends

Abstract

A tradução é recorrente no mundo em que vivemos e está presente no cotidiano de forma recorrente para pessoas bilíngues, já que se pode pensar em diversos textos no aspecto de suas possíveis traduções e releituras em outra língua. É por isso, também, que ocorre certa frustração entre pessoas bilíngues ao assistirem a um filme ou a uma série e constatarem, de forma subjetiva, que a legenda não cumpre seu papel, algo muito comum no gênero de comédia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar as legendas em português já existentes do seriado Friends e avaliar como a tradução foi feita, além de propor novas legendas para aquelas que considero inadequadas por não terem atingido o objetivo de gerar humor no português. Os métodos consistiram na compilação do corpus de piadas a serem analisadas, retiradas das 10 temporadas do seriado Friends, totalizando 28 piadas. Para a análise das traduções do ponto de vista teórico, este trabalho foi embasado, principalmente, nos estudos de Vandaele (2010), Rosas (2003), Chiaro (2009), Veiga (2009) e Veisbergs (2014). Este último foi amplamente utilizado na análise, tendo suas estratégias de tradução como norteadoras tanto na análise das legendas já existentes quanto na proposta de novas legendas. Como resultados do trabalho, fez-se a análise de todas as 28 piadas, e, para 13 delas, foram propostas novas legendas em português. Para 15 delas, no entanto, não foram propostas novas traduções. Neste trabalho, foi possível discutir a validade da crítica a certas traduções e também compreender parte do contexto, dos desafios e das limitações em que estão inseridos os tradutores que trabalham com legendas humorísticas.

Translation is recurrent in the world we live in and is present in everyday life, especially for bilinguals, since it is possible to think of several texts in terms of their possible translations and interpretations in another language. That is why, too, there is a certain frustration among bilinguals when watching a movie or a TV series and realizing, in a subjective manner, that the subtitle does not fulfill its role. This is something very common in the comedy genre. The objective of this work was to analyze the existing Portuguese subtitles of the Friends series and to evaluate how the translation was done, in addition to suggesting new subtitles for those that I consider inappropriate because they did not reach the goal of generating humor in Portuguese. The methods consisted of compiling a corpus of jokes to be analyzed, extracted from the 10 seasons of the Friends series, which totalized 28 jokes. For the analysis of the translations from a theoretical point of view, this work was based mainly on the studies of Vandaele (2010), Rosas (2003), Chiaro (2009), Veiga (2009) and Veisbergs (2014). The latter was widely used in the analysis, and his translation strategies were guidelines for both the analysis of the existing subtitles and the suggestion of new ones. As a result of this investigation, all 28 jokes were analyzed, and for 13 of them, new subtitles in Portuguese were suggested. For 15 of them, however, no new translations were conceived. In this work, it was possible to discuss the validity of criticism on certain translations and to understand some of the context, the challenges and the limitations in which the translators are inserted when working with humorous subtitles.
