The objective of the present study was to investigate possible relationships between maturity of moral judgment and complexity of linguistic structure of written communications. Subjects were 30 adolescentes, ages 12-13, from a public school in Porto Alegre, RS (Brazil). Two hypotheses were tested: 1) the correlation between moral maturity level and usage of complex phrasal structures is positive and significant; 2) There is a predominance of subordinate structure, specially of the adverbial ones given, the nature of the stimuli presented, in a task that involves critical reading. The subjects responded to three dilemmas from Kohlberg's Moral Judgment Situations, the answers were analused for moral maturity according to Kohlberg's method as well as for linguistic complexity. The methodology utilized for evaluation of the linguistc structure was content analysis 1496 sentence structures were analysed. Both hypotheses were confirmed, regarding the first hypothesis, a correlation of .52 (p > .01) was found between moral judgment and total number of sentences was found, as well as a correlation of .59 (p > .01) between moral rnaturity scores and total of subordinate clauses. Regarding the second hypothesis, there was a predominance af subordinate clauses, mainly of the adverbial ones, as expected when stimuli are such as Kohlberg's dilemmas. Other correlations between MMS and different kinds of clauses, absolute, coordinate, and subordinative of various categories (adjective, substantive, and various subtypes of subordinate besides the adverbial, such as causal, final, concessive, comparative, proporcional, temporal, consecutive and conformative) investigated are also presented in detail and their congruence with the hipotheses is discussed. The discussion of the study focuses on the importance of language development for internalization of values, and on the possible relationhips between universal values and elaborated language, be it as an indicator of mental maturity, or as a sign of reflexive, conscious critical thinking. ...
