The present study assessed the hydrodynamics of the Itajaí-Açu river estuary through the investigation of the co-oscillations of the astronomical tide along the system and the investigation of the estuary-shelf exchange at low frequency. Water level data were recorded hourly at four sites along the estuary, at 1.5, 18, 35, and 55 km from the mouth, during the period from December 1999 to December 2000. Current velocity and direction were recorded hourly using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP), moored at the lower estuary, at 3.5 km upstream from the mouth, and at the inner shelf, 4 km offshore in front the mouth. The ADCPs recorded from October 2002 to April 2003. Wind speed and direction were recorded hourly at a meteorological station located at Itajaí. Itajaí-Açu river discharge was obtained with the Brazilian National Water Agency at daily basis. The dataset was analyzed using tidal harmonic analysis and continuous wavelet transform. The estuary-shelf interaction was assessed at subtidal frequency (SubTF), by calculating an Estuarine Exchange Flux (EEF) in order to quantify the exchanges. The results showed that the tidal co-oscillation in the estuary is strongly modulated by river discharge. Under high discharge conditions, the cooscillation is strongly frictional, with attenuation of the tidal contituints. Under low discharge conditions, the propagation is non-frictional, with slightly amplification of some tidal constituents. Sea level perturbations caused by meteorological tides propagates up estuary with no loss of energy. The wavelet analysis allowed to observe that the amplification is higher during spring tide, meawhile is insignificant during neap tides. It was also noticeable that the tidal deformation responds quickly to the increasing of river discharge. The estuary-shelf exchanges at SubTF were intenser at low discharge periods, driven firstly by the gravitational circulation. During meteorological tides events the longshore winds produces the water level rise through the Ekman mechanism, and one implication is the intensification of the gravitational circulation and the EEF. Although the dynamics of the Itajaí-Açu river estuary is strongly forced by events of high river discharge, during the periodos of low river discharge, which lasts for longer times, the exchanges with the inner shelf are affected by remote winds. The local winds play small role in the system.en
