Euclides da Cunha e Os sertões : atravessando temporalidades

Abstract

Estudos acerca do tempo têm se proliferado nos últimos anos na área de historiografia, ampliando os questionamentos a respeito das relações entre passado, presente e futuro. No Brasil, desde o século XIX, a experiência do tempo vinha se transformando. O intuito deste trabalho é compreender de que forma a temporalidade é pensada na virada para o século XX. A fonte escolhida para realizar este estudo foi a obra de Euclides da Cunha (1866-1909), em particular Os Sertões (1902). Nele pode-se perceber como o tempo se torna um elemento chave na interpretação da Guerra de Canudos. Os eventos narrados ultrapassam a simples descrição do conflito e acabam apontando para uma espécie de gênese do sertão. Por meio da construção de uma série de imagens e uso de figuras de linguagem, o autor vai organizando uma narrativa fortemente pautada na noção do olhar e da distância. A partir destes fundamentos percebe-se como o autor vai separando espacialmente e temporalmente as sociedades litorâneas e sertaneja, chegando ao ponto de atribuir aos sertanejos um afastamento temporal de três séculos em relação ao litoral, quando não são colocados “fora do tempo”. Tempo histórico do qual fariam parte as outras sociedades, ligadas ao progresso e a civilizações ocidentais. Com isso, percebe-se que o conceito de contemporaneidade do não-contemporâneo permeia toda a sua obra, apontando para a multiplicidade de estratos temporais intrínsecos ao processo de construção da história brasileira.

In recent years, studies concerning time have proliferated in the field of historiography, furthering questions on the relationship between past, present and future. In Brazil, since the 19th century, the experience of time had been changing. The aim of this work is to understand in which way temporality manifested itself at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Given the impossibility to cover all the production of this timeframe, the source chosen to carry out this study was the work of Euclides da Cunha (1866-1909), particularly Os Sertões (“Rebellion in the Backlands”) from 1902. In it, it is possible to perceive how time becomes a key element in the interpretation of the Canudos War. The events narrated surpass the simple description of the conflict and end up pointing towards some sort of genesis of the backcountry (sertão). Through the construction of a series of images and figures of speech, the author organizes a narrative centered on the notion of looking and distance. From these foundations, we perceive how the author separates, spatially and temporally, the coastal and backcountry (sertaneja) society, going so far as to attribute to the backlanders a three-century temporal distance from the coast, when the latter is not placed “outside of time”. Historical time, in this case, of which other societies, those connected to progress and civilization, would be part of. Therefore, we conclude that the concept of contemporaneity of the non-contemporaneous permeates his entire work, pointing out to the multiplicity of temporal strata underlying the process of constitution of the Brazilian History.
