“Educar pel’O Exemplo” : educação e intersecções de raça, gênero e classe na imprensa negra de Porto Alegre no pós-abolição

Abstract

Com o objetivo de refletir sobre as lutas políticas protagonizadas por indivíduos e grupos negros no pós-abolição, o presente artigo parte do ponto de vista de intelectuais reunidos na imprensa negra de Porto Alegre, mais exatamente durante a primeira fase do jornal O Exemplo (1892-1897). Seu programa voltava-se ao combate ao racismo e à ignorância e, além da garantia de uma escolarização formal de qualidade, pretendiam também “educar pel’O Exemplo”. Explorando o duplo sentido dessa expressão e as relações mantidas com o público, analisamos os sentidos atribuídos à instrução e à educação, com ênfase nas relações e expectativas de gênero no interior dessa coletividade. Assim, esperamos ainda oferecer reflexões sobre como as intersecções de raça e gênero concorreram para a construção de desigualdades sociais e agenciamentos políticos no pós-abolição

With the objective of reflecting on the political struggles carried out by black individuals and groups in the post-abolition, this article starts from the point of view of intellectuals gathered in the black press of Porto Alegre, more precisely during the first phase of the newspaper O Exemplo. (1892-1897). Their program focused on the fight against racism and ignorance and, in addition to ensuring quality formal schooling, they also intended to “educate by example”. Exploring the double meaning of this expression and the relationships entertained with the audience, we analyze the meanings attributed to instruction and education, with an emphasis on gender relations and expectations within this community. Thus, we hope to offer reflections such as the intersections of race, gender contributed to the construction of social inequalities and political agencies in the post-Abolition
