Um estudo sobre elementos matemáticos em contos de Malba Tahan

Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo contos do autor-personagem Malba Tahan, com o intuito de responder a pergunta diretriz “como e quais elementos matemáticos emergem e são abordados em contos de Malba Tahan?”. A partir desta problemática, busca-se perceber se o autor explicita a intencionalidade de ensinar matemática através de suas narrativas e analisar como a relação matemática e literatura é estabelecida nesses contos. A trajetória de Malba Tahan chama atenção por este ser um docente à frente de seu tempo, buscando alternativas para o ensino, pautado no tradicionalismo e no algebrismo, que predominava na época. Seu best-seller “O homem que calculava” não é a única obra que apresenta a relação matemática e literatura na narrativa, encontramos contos em que elementos matemáticos emergem em sua narrativa em livros que são coletâneas de contos. Os contos analisados nesta pesquisa foram retirados dos livros “Céu de Allah”, “Maktub”, “O gato do cheique e outras lendas” e “O livro de Aladim”. Estes apresentam os elementos matemáticos ora de forma explícita ora implícita na narrativa, articulada com as situações vivenciadas pelos personagens e com o contexto árabe, que é uma característica marcante do autor-personagem Malba Tahan. Dentre os diversos elementos matemáticos que constatamos, destaca-se aqueles que propiciam o que chamamos de “violentar o pensamento lógico”, que se caracterizam como situações originadas de desafios que o leitor pode julgar impossíveis de serem solucionados em um primeiro momento, mas cuja solução surpreende ao fazer uso de algum procedimento, conceito ou propriedade matemáticos. Esta pesquisa evidencia a relevância dos contos de Malba Tahan, por sua riqueza criativa e potencial pedagógico, considerando-os um legado para a Educação Matemática.

This research has as its object of study the author- character Malba Tahan’s tales, with the purpose of answering the guideline question “how and which mathematical elements emerge and are addressed in Malba Tahan’s tales?”. Based on this matter, we seek to understand if the author makes explicit the intentionality of teaching mathematics through his narratives and analyze how the relation between mathematics and literature is stablished in these tales. Malba Tahan’s path draws attention because he was a teacher ahead of his time, seeking alternatives to teaching, based on traditionalism and algebraism, which predominated at the time. His best-seller “The man who counted” is not the only work that shows the relation between mathematics and literature in its narrative, we find tales in which mathematical elements emerge in its narrative in books of tales collections. The tales analyzed in this research were taken from the books “Allah’s Heaven”, “Maktub”, “The cheik’s cat and other myths” and “The Book of Aladdin”. These present the mathematical elements either explicitly or implicitly in the narrative, articulated with the situations experienced by the characters and with the Arab background, which is an outstanding characteristic of the author-character Malba Tahan. Among the several mathematical elements we noted, stands out those that provide what we call “violent logical thinking” which are characterized as situations arising from challenges that the reader may judge impossible to solve at first, but whose solution surprises by making use of some procedure, concept or mathematical property. This research highlights the relevance of Malba Tahan's tales, for their creative richness and pedagogical potential, considering them a legacy for Mathematics Education.
