Desde então, mais de 20.000 transplantes já foram realizados, de acordo com o registro anual da Sociedade Internacional de Transplante de Coração e Pulmão e existem mais de 12.000 pacientes em lista de espera 1 . Estima-se que, a cada ano, aproximadamente, 40.000 pessoas no mundo morrem de condições em que o transplante seria potencialmente indicado. Entretanto, o número de transplantes realizados mantém-se inalterado na faixa dos 2.500 por ano há alguns anos 2,3. Por conseguinte, faz-se necessária uma abordagem terapêutica que ofereça uma alternativa no manejo desses doentes e que se definam critérios claros e objetivos para a indicação de transplante.
