Do texto à imagem cinematográfica : a caracterização visual do intérprete e a construção da personagem para o cinema

Abstract

Orgulho e preconceito é um livro escrito entre 1796 e 1797 pela escritora inglesa Jane Austen (1775-1817) durante o princípio da Revolução Industrial, também co-nhecido como período da Regência, na Inglaterra. Ele narra a história das cinco ir-mãs Bennet, jovens de uma família inglesa rural de classe média lidando com ques-tões como patrimônio, classes sociais, moralidade e preconceito. A obra foi encenada em diferentes formatos na televisão, teatro e cinema ao longo do tempo. Uma de suas adaptações cinematográficas mais recentes, considerada uma das mais fieis, estreou em 2005 pela United Internacional Pictures, e é o objeto de estu-do deste artigo. Como Austen não descreveu a aparência das cinco irmãs, e sim, suas personalidades, a caracterização visual das intérpretes ficou a cargo da desig-ner de figurino. Este trabalho tem por objetivo suscitar a reflexão sobre como a ca-racterização visual da intérprete colaborou para a construção das personagens des-sa obra cinematográfica, visto que cada uma das Bennet é caracterizada de maneira única, de acordo com sua personalidade. Para tal, os figurinos das irmãs serão a-presentados, analisados e comparados entre si e com sua versão literária publicada em 1813, passando também pela transição do texto em formato de roteiro. Com is-so, espera-se contribuir para valorização da caracterização visual do intérprete como elemento de comunicação em cena.

Pride and Prejudice is a book written between 1796 and 1797 by the english writter Jane Austen (1775- 1817) during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, also known as the Regency period in England. It tells the story of the five Bennet sisters, young women of a rural middle class English family dealing with issues such as wealth, social classes, morality and prejudice. The piece was staged in different for-mats on television, theater and cinema over time. One of its most recent cinemato-graphic adaptations, considered as one of the most faithful, was launched in 2005 by United Internacional Pictures will the object of study of this paper. As Austen did not describe the appearance of the five sisters, but their personalities, the visual charac-terization of the interpreters was in charge of the costume designer. This work aims to raise the reflection on how the visual characterization of the interpreter contributed to the construction of the characters of this cinematographic piece, since each of the Bennets is characterized in a unique way, according to their personality. To this end, the sisters’ costumes will be presented, analyzed and compared with each other and with their literary version published in 1813, also going through the transition of the text in script format. Thus, it is expected to contribute to the enhancement of the vis-ual characterization of the interpreter as an element of communication on the scene.
