Papel social dos algoritmos : uma análise dos estudos acadêmicos acerca dos algoritmos e sua função social

Abstract

De caráter exploratório e abordagem qualitativa, este trabalho tem como objetivo geral analisar como se constituem os estudos acadêmicos, apresentados em artigos científicos, acerca dos algoritmos digitais como preocupação social, nas áreas de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, através das bases de dados Project Muse, SCOPUS e SciELO. Define como objetivos específicos: a) Explorar os documentos coletados na base de dados. b) Estabelecer relações existentes entre as categorias analisadas. c) Problematizar a relação dos algoritmos na formação social do regime de informação em uma sociedade de controle. Utiliza, para levantamento e análise dos documentos coletados nas bases de dados, os procedimentos metodológicos da Análise de Conteúdo, realizados em três etapas (pré-análise, exploração do material e tratamento dos dados). A partir do levantamento nas referidas bases de dados, são analisados 220 artigos científicos que trazem em seu conteúdo reflexões acerca do papel social dos algoritmos. Classifica em 11 categorias os artigos analisados, agrupados por semelhança temática. Apresenta em seu referencial teórico as relações históricas de poder, regime de verdade e regime de informação. Introduz a história da constituição dos algoritmos e apresenta discussões quanto à repercussão social dos algoritmos digitais. Conclui que a temática com maior representação dentre os artigos analisados está relacionada à personalização algorítmica, juntamente com reflexões sobre opacidade, manipulação e discriminação algorítmica, seus impactos e influência no comportamento humano. Compreende que os algoritmos não são neutros, mas refletem e reproduzem as formações discursivas de cada sociedade. Entende que as reflexões e questionamentos acerca do papel social dos algoritmos ainda carecem de pesquisas. Anuncia perspectivas para novos estudos a partir dos resultados e investigações presentes nesta pesquisa.

Exploratory and qualitative approach, this work has as main objective to analyze how to make up academic studies, presented in scientific articles, about the digital algorithms such as social concern in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities, through Project Muse databases, SCOPUS and SciELO. Defines as specific objectives: a) Explore the documents collected in the database. b) Establish existing relationships between the categories analyzed. c) Problematize the relationship of the algorithms in the social formation of the information regime in a control society. For the survey and analysis of the documents collected in the databases, it uses the methodological procedures of Content Analysis, carried out in three stages (pre-analysis, exploration of the material and treatment of the data). From the survey in the referred databases, it analyzes 220 scientific articles that bring in their content reflections about the social role of the algorithms. Classifies the analyzed articles in 11 categories, grouped by thematic similarity. It presents in its theoretical framework the historical relations of power, regime of truth and regime of information. Introduces the history of the constitution of algorithms and presents discussions regarding the social repercussion of digital algorithms. Concludes that the theme with the greatest representation among the analyzed articles is related to algorithmic customization, together with reflections on opacity, manipulation and algorithmic discrimination, their impacts and influence on human behavior. Understand that the algorithms are not neutral, but reflect and reproduce the discursive formations of each society. Perceives that the reflections and questions about the social role of the algorithms still need research. Announces perspectives for new studies based on the results and investigations present in this research.
