Os significados sociais da realização variável da vibrante múltipla alveolar em onset silábico em Porto Alegre (RS) : variação, mudança linguística e estilo

Abstract

Esta tese tem como objeto de estudo sociolinguístico a realização de /r/ como vibrante múltipla alveolar em onset silábico no português de Porto Alegre (RS), em contextos como carro, rua. O objetivo geral é verificar os efeitos dos significados sociais na variação e mudança de /r/ produzida como vibrante múltipla alveolar [r], em variação com realizações fricativas, velar [x] ou glotal [h]. O primeiro objetivo específico é medir a frequência geral de realização de /r/ como vibrante múltipla alveolar em onset nessa comunidade de fala e o segundo, comparar os condicionadores, linguísticos e extralinguísticos, da realização da vibrante múltipla em dados de duas amostras, LínguaPOA, mais recentemente constituída (de 2016 a 2019), e VARSUL (anos 1990). Faz-se uma análise em Tempo Real e uma em Tempo Aparente, nos moldes da Teoria da Variação (LABOV, 2008). Os resultados indicam mudança linguística em fase de completação, em direção à produção categórica das fricativas. Para atingir o terceiro objetivo específico, de identificar as identidades sociais que estão associadas à produção, rara, mas ainda verificada, de vibrante múltipla alveolar em onset silábico em Porto Alegre (RS), realizam-se análises qualitativas baseadas em estilo e gerenciamento de persona (COUPLAND, 2001) e no conceito de stance (JAFFE, 2016). Analisa-se o nível de envolvimento e aceitação dos falantes da amostra em relação ao tradicionalismo gaúcho, na hipótese de que práticas sociais desse movimento cultural promovam as eventuais realizações (estilísticas) de /r/ como vibrante múltipla alveolar. Faz-se uma investigação etnográfica baseada em observação e entrevistas de explicitação (GORE et al., 2012) em um CTG de Porto Alegre para verificar se há presença da vibrante múltipla em onset silábico na fala dessa comunidade de prática (WENGER, 1998; ECKERT, 2003) e como se dá a construção e o gerenciamento do estilo de persona gaúcho. Realizase, além disso, uma análise de percepção e avaliação baseada na técnica dos estímulos pareados (LAMBERT, 1960), com o objetivo de identificar quais as variáveis relacionadas pelos ouvintes ao uso da vibrante múltipla alveolar em onset silábico em Porto Alegre (RS). Busca-se também verificar que significados sociais podem estar atrelados ao uso da vibrante múltipla pelos porto-alegrenses. Os resultados revelam que, para os porto-alegrenses, a vibrante não indexa o falar da capital, indexa o falar do interior, carregado de sotaque. No entanto, não têm clareza sobre a variável indexar o falar gaúcho. Reafirmamos, após todas as análises, que a realização vibrante alveolar múltipla em onset silábico se tornou relíquia no português falado em Porto Alegre. O que sustenta a eventual realização de /r/ como [r] nessa variedade é a figura do gaúcho, mantida pela indústria cultural.

This thesis has as its object of sociolinguistic study the realization of / r / as trill in syllabic onset in Portuguese spoken in Porto Alegre (RS) in contexts such as carro (car), rua (street). The general objective is to verify the effects of social meanings on the variation and change of / r / produced as trill [r], in variation with fricative, velar [x] or glottal [h] realizations. The first specific objective is to measure the general frequency of / r / realization as a trill in onset in this speech community and the second, to compare the linguistic and extralinguistic conditioners, of the trill realization in data from two samples, LínguaPOA, most recently constituted (from 2016 to 2019), and VARSUL (1990s). Analyses in Real Time and in Apparent Time are made, along the lines of the Theory of Variation (LABOV, 2008). The results indicate linguistic change in the process of completion, towards the categorical production of fricatives. To achieve the third specific objective, to identify the social identities that are associated with the production, rare but still verified, of trill in syllabic onset in Porto Alegre (RS), qualitative analyses based on style and persona management are carried out (COUPLAND, 2001) and the concept of stance (JAFFE, 2016). The level of involvement and acceptance of the sample's speakers is analyzed in relation to the gaucho tradicionalism, in the hypothesis that social practices of this cultural movement promote the eventual (stylistic) realizations of / r / as a trill. An ethnographic investigation based on observation and explicitation interviews (GORE et al., 2012) is carried out in a CTG in Porto Alegre to verify the presence of the trill in syllabic onset in the speech of this community of practice (WENGER, 1998; ECKERT, 2003) and how the construction and management of the gaucho persona style takes place. In addition, a perception and evaluation analysis based on the matched-guise technique is also carried out (LAMBERT, 1960), with the objective of identifying which variables are related by the listeners to the use of the trill in syllabic onset in Porto Alegre (RS). It also seeks to verify which social meanings may be associated to the use of the trill in Porto Alegre. The results reveal that the people of Porto Alegre have the perception that the trill does not index the speech of the capital. However, they do not have the same clarity about the variable to index gaucho speech. We reaffirm, after all the analyses, that the trill realization in syllabic onset became a relic in the Portuguese spoken in Porto Alegre. The figure of the gaucho maintained by the cultural industry is what sustains the eventual realization os /r/ as trill in this variety of Brazilian Portuguese.
