The present paper aims at looking into the motivational elements involved in the learning process of students to study the diatonic button accordion, within the context of the project called “Fábrica de Gaiteiros” and has the principles of the selfdetermination theory developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan in the 1970s (DECI; RYAN, 1985, 2000, 2008; RYAN; DECI, 2000) as theoretical basis. According to the authors, this theory provides baseline to the thesis that human beings have essential basic psychological needs, met (or not) taking into account their senses of competence, autonomy and relatedness perceived according to the context where they live. The research methodology, in a qualitative approach, used the semistructured interview as a strategy of investigation. As choice criteria in the selection of participants, it was stated that students should have been part of the project in the city of Barra do Ribeiro for at least two years and their ages ranging from 10 to 15 years old. Data were categorized based on the research points and script and analyzed under the perspective of the self-determination theory. Results have shown that the students who took part in the research presented a self-determined profile to study the diatonic button accordion during the time they stayed in the project “Fábrica de Gaiteiros” and the basic psychological need of relatedness was shown to be the one that had the greatest influence in the self-determination of the students.en
