This dissertation of Master's degree analyzes the theoretical review about the construct intelligence in light of Psychometrics, as well as the adaptation of verbal subtests from the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence or Escala de Inteligência Wechsler Abreviada (WASI) for Brazilian reality. The evaluation of intelligence has different concepts: psychometric, developmental, and cognitivist. On the psychometric concept, it's worth sayng that the psychometric birth is marked by the debate between the ideas of Spearman (a general factor of intelligence) and Thurstone (several factors). This dichotomy is represented in the Gf-Gc model of Cattell, which suffered subsequent changes culminating in an intermediate position, the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory. The psychometric theoretical evolution is directly related to intelligence testing. Accordingly, it is highlighted the replacement of the term IQ reason for deviation IQ, term proposed by David Wechsler. Besides this conceptual change, researchers highlight the growing increase of IQ scores, a phenomenon called Flynn effect. Due to the existence of several intelligence psychometric theories, it seems to be critical for the psychologist to own the theoretical basis of each test, since the interpretation of IQ scores depends on the type of the test chosen. Hence, it is worth highlight that this dissertation of Master's degree had as one of its focus (Article 2) the adaptation of verbal subtests from the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, developed by Psychological Corporation (nowadays called Pearson), for Brazil. In order to do so, a simple translation from the original material, a preliminary study with 30 participants, besides the adaptation of items to the Brazilian culture were carried out. Subsequently, a study with 814 subjects between 6 and 89 years old from the cities of Porto Alegre and São Paulo was carried out. Based on these data, specialist analyses were performed, as well as the difficulty grade of items estimated by Item Response Theory (IRT). IRT results showed that verbal item sorting on the original WASI was different from the sorting of items translated into Portuguese. The findings of this study reinforce the need for tests adaptation from one culture to another, considering semantic as well as psychometrical equivalence. It concludes that the psychologist must have knowledge about the theories that endorse the current intelligence tests and know the real cognitive skill that each device evaluates. Although the psychological tests may help on the guidelines for a research process and psychological diagnosis, they cannot replace the technical competences of the professional who uses it.en
