Water leisure activities and sports are extremely popular. In addition to their attraction to both natural and artificial waterbodies, many people also use swimming pools as a means of alleviate the heat sensation during the summer. However, these activities are not free from risks. In addition to the hazards associated with injuries, drowning, etc., swimming pools can be sources of disease transmission if their water is not properly treated. The conventional method of treatment consists of filtration, recirculation, and addition of purifying chemicals, typically chlorine. However, these chemicals are not completely safe and can cause accidents during their production and distribution, have adverse side effects to the users due to their potentially carcinogenic byproducts, and may also affect constructive components and the environment. A possible solution to this problem is the natural swimming pool, which uses plants for water purification, following the same principles of water treatment applied in constructed wetlands. In addition to mimicking a process that occurs in nature and therefore, without chemical input, natural swimming pools have an extraordinary landscape value. In this study, natural swimming pools were designed, and the conventional and the biological treatments systems of swimming pools were compared under two situations: private residential swimming pool and collective residential swimming pool. It was concluded that the biological system can meet the treatment needs under both situations, and that its higher initial costs are offset in the long term by the almost insignificant impact on the environment and the health of users, by its lower maintenance and operation complexity, and the absence of expenses with chemicals. ...
