Elucubrações sobre a sociedade porto-alegrense do século XIX em Cães da província : episódios de loucura

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem como foco aprofundar a discussão sobre a temática da loucura no romance histórico Cães da Província, de Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil. Diversas obras da literatura brasileira que retratam a sociedade do século XIX exploraram esse tema “como recurso literário em épocas de repressão” (MARIA, 2005). Seguindo essa linha de raciocínio, aqui abordarei o que denominei de “episódios de loucura”, que permeiam a trama engendrada por Assis Brasil, a fim de desvelar as aparências edificadas por uma sociedade porto-alegrense, deveras, provinciana. Após apresentar a obra e delimitar características que a categorizam como novo romance histórico, citando outros trabalhos já realizados sobre a mesma – que priorizam, sobretudo, analisar a construção de Qorpo-Santo como personagem de ficção dentro do contexto histórico ao qual ele pertence –, introduzo a análise sobre os episódios de loucura, divididos em quatro partes principais. Tendo como base bibliográfica para as elucubrações as obras de caráter filosófico Elogio da Loucura, de Erasmo, e História da Loucura, de Michel Foucault, examino a loucura em Cães da Província para revelar sua incorporação ao personagem Qorpo- Santo; para tentar compreendê-la cientificamente a partir do olhar de Landell e de Joaquim Pedro, os psiquiatras do romance; para entender sua influência nas relações sociais – suas bênçãos e maldições ao casamento de Eusébio e Lucrécia – ; e, por fim, para estender sua influência às mulheres do romance – quase sempre culpabilizadas pelos desatinos masculinos. As considerações finais convergem para a ideia de que a loucura, em Cães da Província, não está exclusivamente representada na figura de Qorpo-Santo, mas está principalmente por trás das relações sociais estabelecidas em uma sociedade que reprime e oprime todo e qualquer desejo ou sentimento que escape à moralidade não compartilhada pela maioria cativa de uma vida de aparências.

The present work aims at deepening the discussion about the theme “madness” in Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil‟s historical novel Cães da Província. Many Brazilian literary works that portray the nineteenth century make use of this motif as a “literary resource in times of repression” (MARIA, 2005). Taking into consideration this train of thought, I will approach what I refer to as “episodes of madness” that permeate the plot created by Assis Brasil in order to unveil the appearances instilled by a rather provincial porto-alegrense society. After introducing the work and delimiting the characteristics that place it as a new historical novel, by relying on further studies about it that aim mainly at analyzing the construction of Qorpo-Santo as a fictional character inside the context to which he belongs, I introduce the analysis about the episodes of madness, that are divided in four main sections. Having the works of philosophical character The Praise of Folly, by Erasmus, and History of Madness, by Michel Foucault as bibliographical basis for the elucubrations, I analyze the madness in Cães da Província not only to better understand how it relates to the character Qorpo-Santo, but also to scientifically comprehend it through the perspective of Landell and Joaquim Pedro, the psychiatrists of the novel, to understand its influence in the social relations – its blessings and curses in the marriage of Eusébio and Lucrécia – and also to extend its influence to the women in the novel – frequently blamed for the male carelessness. The final remarks converge to the proposal that the madness in Cães da Província is not exclusively represented in the character of Qorpo-Santo, but rather in the social relations established by a society that suppresses and oppresses any desire or feeling that is not tied to the morality that is not shared by a majority that is subject to a life of appearances.
