Explorando a Capela de Kernstein : Uma leitura de Carmilla, de Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Abstract

Este trabalho propõe uma leitura da obra Carmilla, de Sheridan Le Fanu, analisando seus vários desdobramentos e possibilidades, sem pretender esgotá-los. O mito do vampiro vem fascinando e intrigando as pessoas há muitos séculos, e foi na literatura que ele encontrou o seu habitat ideal: um mundo que não se opõe à sua existência, e que, inclusive, contribui para sua perpetuação. Mais fascinante do que um vampiro, só mesmo uma vampira: Carmilla, a vampira de Karnstein, que carrega em si todos os elementos misteriosos do monstro que se alimenta de sangue, mas sob a forma do ser transgressor social e cultural por natureza: a mulher. Uma vampira lésbica representa uma ameaça à sociedade patriarcal e deve ser combatida, pois a sua ameaça vai além de sua condição de monstro: ela é capaz de romper padrões e normas pré-estabelecidos e, assim, trazer a desordem. A leitura proposta aqui é de cunho interpretativo e pessoal. Ao longo do trabalho lanço mão de algumas teorias sobre a obra, seja para fortalecer o meu ponto de vista ou para enriquecer a análise.

This work offers a reading of the work Carmilla, by Sheridan Le Fanu, analyzing its various unfoldings and possibilities, without attempting to exhaust them. The myth of the vampire has fascinated and puzzled people for centuries, and it was in literature that it found its ideal habitat: a world that is not opposed to its existence, and even contributes to its perpetuation. More fascinating than a vampire, only a female vampire: Carmilla, the Karnstein vampire, who carries along all the mysterious elements of a monster that feeds on blood, but in the form of that naturally transgressive social and cultural being: a woman. A lesbian vampire represents a threat to patriarchal society and must be opposed, because its threat goes beyond its monster condition: she is capable of breaking pre-established standards and norms, thus bringing forth disorder. The reading proposed here has an interpretive and personal nature. During the development of the work, I will make use of some theoretical support both to strengthen my point and to enhance the analysis.
