The measurement of physical quantity agents human beings are exposed during their workday has great interest when one wants to assess whether these can bring any harm, damage to health, or even just cause discomfort. Specifically, regarding the acceleration magnitude, it may cause damages that are from mild to severe. Measuring systems for acceleration and angular positions have a high cost, are often restricted to only limited data and have a questionable portability. Based on the need for portable vibration measuring systems, it is developed in this work a prototype for data acquisition that measures accelerations in three directions and in three angular positions, leading to a six degrees of freedom system. The correct measurement of acceleration in reference to a global Cartesian system, should take into account this translational and rotational motion when the human being that carries the sensors is in motion. Otherwise, relatively large errors will be perceived in the acceleration components. The proposed system is assembled using the Arduino device, an electronic prototyping platform hardware and free single board along with an accurate and low cost digital accelerometer. The work is motivated by the fact that the use of accelerometers with three axes is always done without proper correction of existing rotating components when the system is in motion, leading to erroneous readings for acceleration. Thus, the equation for correction of the translational accelerations due to movement and rotations experienced by the accelerometer is adequately addressed using four-dimensional vectors, quaternions. This paper describes the prototype as well as the equations necessary for the programming of the corrections of the readings. Experimental tests are performed in order to calibrate the system with commercial accelerometers and compare measurements using the proposed corrections. Later, the system is applied to a real case of a human walking in which the importance of these corrections are highlighted and it is even possible to identify and analyze the human gait. ...
