Metallic foams have very convenient mechanical properties in engineering applications. They offer potential use especially in situations where is desired high mechanical strength in combination with a low density or a high-energy absorption until failure. Being a cellular solid with random structure, the modeling and simulation of its mechanical behavior is a challenge. This paper aims to conduct a study on the structural behavior of open cell metallic foams, developing a microstructural numerical model for analysis. It was used the geometric model of the Kelvin cell for the linear and non-linear numeric simulations developed within the commercial finite element software Ansys®. The results obtained allows to validate the proposed model and to better understand the behavior of this kind of structure, showing the influence of important effects arising due to manufacturing methods, such as anisotropy, variations in the thickness of the cellular connections and imperfections in the mesh cell foam. ...
