The carnivore procyonids, Nasua nasua, the brown-nosed coati, is a typical South American species which, until recently, there was little information about it. On the Campeche Island, southeast coast of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina state, with an area nearly 50 ha, an attempt was made to evaluate the following aspects of N. nasua: use and selection of habitat, daily activity pattern, influence of abiotic factors on the activity of the animals; and the use of the vertical space and behavior. Descriptive data were also collected, mainly those of casual observation such as: the reaction to the observer’s presence, interaction with human being, relations with the environment, beginning and ending of the daily activities, reproductive period, group cohesion, competition, predators and mortality. In order to obtain the data, between February 2005 and February 2006, tracks, over the most habitats of the island, were traveled around, seasonally, in such a systematized way and in pre-established time. In 60 days of sampling, performing 420 hours of searching, 270 detections were recorded, 80 of solitary individuals and 190 of bands. The daily activity pattern of the bands and of the solitary animals were not correlated. The activity of bands varied throughout the day with peaks in the early morning and in the late afternoon. The variation of the solitary animals activity was not significant, but it was more detected in the morning. The activity daily pattern of the bands and the solitary animals was not the same among the seasons of the years. Moreover, the intensity of the activity was bigger in the spring and in the summer for both social organizations. Between 18.00 h and 19.00 h there was a reduction in the activity of the bands, whereas the solitary ones, tended to keep active in the same period, in the autumn and in the summer. The habitats were used, heterogeneously, having a similar use and general selection pattern, on the part of the bands and the solitary animals. The dense rain forest was preponderantly used, and secondly, the anthropic formation, with both being positively selected. Daily and seasonally, the animals keep the same use pattern of the habitats with a greater diversification of the use, in the spring. The dense rain forest was used in greater proportion, in the most part of the day, mainly in the initial and final periods. The biggest variation in the habitat use occurred in the period next to midday. Habitat selection varied throughout the year, with the selection of the dense rain forest being observed by the bands and the anthropic formation being observed by the solitary animals. The number of detections of the active coatis has been positively related with the photoperiod, and negatively, with the periods of the middle of the day and afternoon. When noticing the presence of the observer the animals often produced an alarm vocalization, immediately running away, or, when they were on trees, getting immobile. Coatis interacted with humans beings, basically, for the attainment of food, what generally caused conflicts. Burrows among rocks were eventually used to forage. Under storm conditions the animals remained inactive on the trees. Coatis built nests on the trees in order to rest. These ones were frequently found in Syagrus romanzoffiana and Syzygium jambolanum, from which the animals consumed the fruits, mainly from the first one. Coatis built connections between trees, joining suspended branches, to facilitate the arboreal dislocation. Moreover, animals going through the same route on the arboreal stratum were observed. Synchronism between the beginning and ending of the animals daily activities with sunset and sunrise was observed. However, in the winter and in the spring, solitary active coatis were detected in the evening. The mating period probably occurs in the end of winter, September, with nestling birth happening between the end of November and in the beginning of December. During the day coatis use the ground a lot more, with variation during the autumn and winter as well as in the first and last periods of the day, when the arboreal stratum was more used. Foraging, dislocating, neutral posture, carrying, nonagonistic social interaction and vocalizating were the behavioral categories registered. The two first were the most representative. Bands showed a greater behavioral diversification. Seasonally, the solitary animals presented greater behavioral variation, whereas the bands showed a more uniform pattern. In the summer, there was the biggest behavioral diversification. The data of this study have contributed to enlarge the knowledge of biology and ecology of N. nasua. However, other studies are necessary to corroborate with the data presented here. This aiming identify patterns that evidencing the species’ plasticity, what is responsible to it living in different environments along its geographic range, and above all, to subsidize strategies of conversation.en
