The aim of this study is to evaluate, by different methods of halitosis diagnosis, the effect of different phases of periodontal treatment on breath measures. This study consists on a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Therefore, 49 patients (51.6±9.34 years old; 63.3% women; 34.7% smokers), diagnosed with gingivitis and moderate to severe chronic periodontitis were included in the study. The patients were examined at baseline (T1), after gingivitis treatment (T2) and after periodontitis treatment (T3) for visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), volatile sulfur compounds (VSC, ppb, Halímeter®), halitosis questionnaire (ARH: auto reported halitosis) and visual analogue scale (VAS). Data were analyzed by Komogorov-smirnov test and Linear Models for dependent samples test. There was no reduction of the mean values of VSC between any of the experimental times, even when considering the percentile analysis. Between T1 and T2, the number of patients who responded to have halitosis (ARH) was 29 and 15, respectively, a statistical significant difference. Between T2 and T3 (13) there was no statistical difference (p> 0.05). Considering the VAS evaluation, significant differences were identified between T1 (2.77 ± 2.08) and T2 (1.94 ± 1.78). Smoking did not influence the results of the present investigation. Therefore, it can be concluded that gingivitis treatment provides a greater reduction of halitosis indicators when compared to periodontitis treatment.en
