A geração de efluentes contendo diferentes poluentes pelo setor produtivo motiva a implementação de tecnologias que minimizem o volume de águas contaminadas produzido e que possibilitem a sua reutilização no processo ou extração de elementos que conferem toxicidade. Tais procedimentos fazem parte do conceito de gestão de resíduos, otimizando processos produtivos, minimizando custos e contribuindo para a prática do desenvolvimento sustentável. Neste contexto, o presente estudo objetivou estudar a remoção de íons nitrato a partir de águas contaminadas utilizando carvão ativado tratado com CaCl2, MgCl2 e KCl como sólido sorvente. A técnica de adsorção aliada à aplicação de um sorvente com propriedades reconhecidas na remoção de ânions e cátions consiste em alternativa ao processo biológico convencionalmente aplicado. O carvão ativado, através do pré-tratamento com diferentes reagentes, teve sua superfície modificada com cátions aumentando a probabilidade de interações eletrostáticas com ânions. Ensaios de sorção em escala bancada foram realizados objetivando determinar a capacidade de sorção do sólido sorvente tratado, em condições de pH próximo à neutralidade e tempos de residência determinados para cada ensaio. Os dados obtidos mostraram que a modificação química do carvão com KCl, CaCl2 e MgCl2 mostrou-se eficiente, uma vez que ocorreu a adsorção de nitrato pelo sólido sorvente. O tratamento com CaCl2 mostrou eficiência superior em comparação aos demais reagentes utilizados, na aplicação do mesmo para remoção de nitrato via sorção. Observou-se que o aumento da concentração do reagente CaCl2 no tratamento do sólido implica em um aumento dos índices de sorção, alcançando valores superiores a 60%.
